This week's episode of The Goldbergs had something for everyone. We had pop culture references, relationship issues, sibling bonding time, and my personal favorite: more Murray! "George! George Glass!" was one of the best episodes we've had in a while, and I hope everyone enjoyed it as much as I did.
"George George Glass!" begins with Barry desperately wanting to attend the Live Aid concert that's in town. Murray says no because the concert will have "morons" there, and he just wants no part of that. Barry continues to beg, and Murray continues to say no. Barry then names every performer that will be at the concert. This goes on forever, and I loved it. Murray's response to Ashford and Simpson was absolutely hilarious.
Murray: "Ashford and Simpson?" I'm in!"
Barry: "Really?"
Murray: "No! None of these names mean anything to me!"
Jeff Garlin's delivery and facial expressions are great especially in this scene. After Murray finally gets Barry to leave him alone, Beverly makes him attend the Beach Boys concert which just happens to be at the Live Aid event that he wanted to avoid so much. He gets irritated with all the traffic, and he ends up fighting with another man over a parking spot. He sets up camp in the parking spot, and the other man leaves, but it's too late. The concert is over, and Beverly is not happy with her husband.
Beverly convinces Murray to try Chi-Chi's restaurant, and it goes well at first, but they leave restaurant before they can finish eating. At this point Beverly has had it with Murray's stubbornness. Beverly says that even though she is stubborn, it's over important things like family; Murray is stubborn over little things that don't matter. I guess she finally gets through to him because he goes back to Chi-Chi's and brings home the fajitas that they missed out on the night before. I liked that he listened to his wife's concerns and made an effort to fix his mistakes and make her happy.
The other story this week revolved around Adam and Erica's love lives. "Waffle Girl" returns to school, and Adam wants to impress her. He watches The Brady Bunch, and gets an idea to create a girlfriend. He names his fake girlfriend Lampy Tableson. Erica makes fun of him, but then she makes up her own boyfriend, Jordan Wahlberg, which is just two members of New Kids on the Block combined. This doesn't work out for either Goldberg sibling.
Adam fails to impress "Waffle Girl" because his experiment with the vacuum fails, and he's awful at paintball. For Erica, her friends figure out that her college boyfriend is fake, and laugh at her. But Adam gets some guy to show up to school and pretend to be Jordan. I thought that was so sweet. Erica breaks up with him and asks Adam why he did that for her. He tells Erica that she and Geoff are the real deal, and they hug.
I enjoyed Adam and Erica bonding this week. Sometimes it seems like they don't have much in common, and they don't always get along, but it was nice to see that Adam cares about his older sister.
Other Thoughts:
- I thought it was hilarious that Adam mentioned the "other" Adam Goldberg again this week. "I can't say my name. It's too confusing. There's another Adam Goldberg in school. He's a senior."
- I loved that Pops, Beverly, and Adam basically reenacted the diner scene from the very first episode. It was a nice trip down memory lane, and it shows how far this show has come.
Favorite Quotes:
- Beverly: "That's on you for ordering beans and liquid cheese in an outdoor stadium in July."
- Murray: "I don't know how to work an oven, and I refuse to learn."
- Adam: "My plan with the vacuum sucked."
- Beverly: "We're going to Chi-Chi's, and you're going to like it!"
