The Fall - Wounds of Deadly Hate - Review

The last episode of The Fall alternates between Spector's therapy sessions and life at the Mental Health institute, his lawyers trying to break him free while Stella's team and herself might have found what they needed to put him behind bars.

There's only one episode left  (airing tomorrow at 9 on BBC2, while the whole season will be available on Netflix the day after) and everything points out to the closure the series will get.
The opening shot is a beautiful close up of Stella lost in thought at her new workplace balcony, it looks like sunrise time, and she isn't fully enveloped by darkness, while a quiet piano adds drama to the scene. Her early wandering is interrupted by Dr Larson's phone call telling her he's going through the alleged entries of Spector in her diary. It cuts to Paul dreaming about jumping off a cliff and Dr Larson's voice narrating what his condition might be, and his history through foster care houses and institutes. The episode title refer to the scars Paul carries around after his mother committing suicide, him not receiving the proper help, and then his life in a catholic institution where he was abused repeatedly.  All this information is given to us through talks with the psychiatrist and the Dr's analysis. An even if you might feel compassion for the boy that suffered so much, there's something the series manages well, there's not even a hint into trying to justify the monster he became. Just a long list of facts.

The pace might be a bit slower to the one we're used to, the heavy dialogue and the recent discoveries the investigation team makes are laying in plain sight. It is, and feels like the step before everything ends. It's lead by uncovering Paul's (or Peter) layers, his new sort of friendship with the other patient that is clearly impressed by him, while Ferrington and Anderson get a glimpse into Spector's life and study and old case related to the diaries they have found. A case that it seems to be closed, and there's a man locked up for it. The man is not innocent but shares the fault, with not other than Paul, he was a kid at the same institution Paul was, and he was protected by him, therefore protecting him when they were adults. But in front of the evidence he can't lie anymore, thus the jaw dropping cliffhanger.

Stella and Anderson interrogate Spector with his lawyer present. Stella doesn't talk, just studies the situation and her target, while little by little Anderson brings into attention the crime Paul committed conjointly in London. A crime he can't play to have forgotten, because his memory wasn't completely lost.

Do you think he if faking the amnesia? By now I'm almost sure he is, and never thought he could be outsmarted by Stella and her team. Can't wait for the final chapter in this outstanding story.
