Speechless - H-A-L-HALOWEEN - Review: Welcome To Everything I hate
27 Oct 2016
MK Reviews SpeechlessABC's comedy Halloween specials continued this Wednesday and the streak of awesome episodes followed as well. Speechless fifth outing, H-A-L-HALOWEEN was another heartwarming and hilarious episode written by Seth Kurland and directed by Christine Gernon.
Quick Recap:
- Halloween came to the DiMeo's house and Jimmy was ecstatic about it. He always came up with great group costumes for the family but this year the kids had different plans, leaving Jimmy and Maya home alone. Maya initially tried to cheer Jimmy up by doing all the thigs they never could cause they were on their Maya hates list but ended up pine over their childless future.
- While Ray wanted to impress newly single Jillian, Dylan put her creepiest effort into creating a freakishly terrifying room for the school of terror.
- JJ and Kenneth attended a Halloween party and JJ did everything in his powers to get drunk and get the teenage experience. He succeeded putting Kenneth in the crossfire with Jimmy and Maya.
What worked:
- Jimmy and Maya spending the night on their own and doing everything my hates and usually doesn't allow them to do. It was a lot of fun to see the two of them play off each other this nicely, the scenes were written so well and Minnie and John delivered great laughs along the way. The whole mood change after the visit from the in sync costumed kids was perfectly executed.
- Ray and Dylan scenes. Just like in the previous episode the two of them had amazing chemistry and the scenes between them were hilarious. Dylan being bored and annoyed by Ray and his crush Jillian was just amazing. Dylan also perfectly creeped me out while talking about how to decorate that room of horror. Kudos to Kyla Kennedy for it.
- Ray and Jimmy's father-son scene once again won my heart over. Jimmy is a really awesome dad and he really feels and understands Ray so well.
- Jimmy and Maya grounding their idiotic teenage son JJ. Them being over the moon cause they could treat JJ as a "normal" teenager was absolutely perfect. This family really lacks normalcy.
- JJ and Kenneth's scenes were on point as always. Micah Fowler really knocked it out of the park this week from acting so smooth during the party to completely drunk and unable to communicate with his parents. Also major kudos to Cedric Yarbrough, Kenneth really got into the role of JJ's aide, but he is more of a brother to him. Can't wait to see more of it.
What didn't work:
- Dylan pining over her jeans? I didn't get why they inserted that into the episode. I get they wanted to portray an easier story to parallel Ray's heartbreak but it felt totally out of place.
The first thematic holiday episode of Speechless come to a glorious end with the family all costumed up out tricker or treating. Next week JJ is going out on a date and in the meantime stop by the comment section and let me know what you thought of H-A-L-HALOWEEN
