Secrets and Lies - The Detective - Review

This week's episode of Secrets and Lies brought us more twists and turns, a few answers, and of course, more questions. The biggest thing we did learn was the mysterious man's name: Danny! I'm so glad that I don't have to call him the "mystery man" in my reviews anymore.

"The Detective" begins with every one looking for Liam including Cornell, Danny, and Eric. The girl that Danny tracked down wasn't much help as she just had a crush on Liam, and it seems he didn't return her feelings. He didn't even show up at the diner. Does anyone else think this Danny guy is scary? Who knows what he would have done if Eric hadn't let the girl run away. After the girl leaves, Eric is able to get some information from Danny, and we learn why Kate sent him photos of the party. She wanted to help find Danny's daughter. In a flashback, Danny ran into Kate while she was buying baby clothes, and showed her pictures of his daughter, Rachel, who is missing.

We finally meet Liam (Hello Zach Florrick. It's weird seeing him on a show other than The Good Wife.) in a flashback, and Eric thinks he was probably stealing client information. In the present he is being held on an old fraud warrant, and is being interrogated by Cornell for Kate's murder. He tells Cornell that he didn't kill Kate; he was just out on a run to get liquor for Patrick. Another flashback shows that Kate cut Patrick off, and he was livid. "If you don't start minding your own business you're going to get hurt." I know that Patrick threatening Kate the night of her death doesn't look good, but I just don't think he's the murderer. Like he said, Kate treated Patrick and Melanie with respect and sent Melanie birthday cards every year. I don't see why Patrick would be mad at Kate.

Eric and Danny want to get their hands on Liam so they concoct a scheme: they will post Liam's bail money, and then grab him. At this time Danny tells Eric "My name's Danny." "Yeah that was worth 10 Gs." I loved Eric's response.

Unfortunately Liam leaves before Danny and Eric can get to him, but they track him down and drag him to a sketchy motel. Liam tells them that he was hacking into the personal financial information of the investors just like Eric thought. Eric asks Liam if he killed Kate, and he immediately says no. He said Cornell wouldn't have let him out of her sight if she thought he did it, and, besides, he liked Kate. Eric then asks Liam if he's Kate's son. He's not. In a flashback we see Kate interviewing Liam for the assistant job. She knew his resume was a complete lie, and he pretended to be all the references on his resume! That takes talent. He admits that he used to steal but wants to go straight and this job wouldn't have any money which would cut down on temptation.

Kate also mentioned that she had done things she regretted. She specifically says, "I was worth the second chance I stole from them." I was confused, and Eric was, too. He has no idea what this means. Could this mean that someone from her past wants her dead?

In yet another flashback (I had to really pay attention to what was in the past and what was current), Liam was on his way to the liquor store for Patrick, but saw Neil in the parking garage talking to Carly. In the present he tells Eric about a bank statement that was linked to an account and was somehow connected to Neil. Kate then started to look into all of Neil's accounts. Liam says that Danny's daughter, Rachel, came to the party with Neil, and Danny flies out of the room. Danny is convinced that Neil is the murderer: he had motive and opportunity. He leaves, and Eric has to stay and deal with Liam. Eric calls the authorities to tell them where Liam is. Eric threatens Liam and tells him he will go to trial and plead guilty for the fraud. If not, Eric will tell everyone what he did at the firm.

Near the end of the episode Eric pays Neil a visit at the bar. Eric tricks Neil into coming over to his apartment, and Danny grabs him. "He's all yours!" Eric tells Danny. Danny slams Neil into the counter, and Eric begs him to tell the truth. It turns out Carly was his date, and Danny's daughter was just there. Carly is a call girl, but there's something else Neil's not telling them. We'll have to wait until next week to find out, though, because the episode ends with knock on the door. It's Detective Cornell! Is she coming to interview Danny or Neil?

I think at this point Neil is too obvious. They wouldn't be painting him as the killer if he really was. I'm also sure that Eric isn't the killer. I don't know why, but I suspect Amanda. She's just so close to Eric and wants to protect him so much ("You always have my back.") I guess we'll get more clues in the next episode.

Other thoughts:

- Amanda and her husband, Greg, are separated, and she tells Eric not to say anything. Greg tells Eric that their family isn't as close as he thinks they are. What does this mean? Should we suspect Amanda?

-In a flashback, a client rips into Eric about losing his money, and we learn Eric wasn't always a stand up guy. This didn't really relate to any other story this week so I wonder how important it is. Could someone from Eric's past have killed Kate for payback?

What did you all think of "The Detective"? Who do you think murdered Kate? Leave a comment and let me know!
