Scene Of The Week - October 30, 2016 + POLL

Oct 30, 2016

A weekly feature in which we're trying to find the most compelling, best acted, written, directed and just generally great, memorable scenes that we've seen in past seven days on TV.

2 BROKE GIRLS, "And the Godmama Drama", October 24, 2016, Actors: Jennifer Coolidge and more
The Scene: Baby Barbara gets baptised in the Desert Bar (picked by Samantha Benjamin)

CODE BLACK, "Demons and Angels", October 26, 2016, Actors: Nafessa Williams, Marcia Gay Harden and more, The Scene: Charlotte is shot and passes away
Jessica VanWinkle:
The acting by the entire cast was phenomenal, especially by Marcia Gay Harden. It was clear that Leanne felt responsible for Charlotte and fought so hard to save her. I loved that Mario and Angus sat together after Charlotte’s death. Honestly I thought this was Mario (Ben Hollingsworth)’s best episode as we saw more emotion and compassion from him. This episode and scene was heartbreaking but the acting was perfect.

CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND, "When Will Josh See How Cool I Am?", October 28, 2016, Actors: Donna Lynne Champlin and more, The Scene: Paula's song about chasing her dreams (picked by Laura Markus)

EYEWITNESS, "Bless the Beast and the Children", October 23, 2016, Actors: James Paxton, Tyler Young, The Scene: Lukas and Philip go to free the turkeys (picked by Babar)

FREQUENCY, "Bleed Over", October 26, 2016, Actors: Peyton List, Riley Smith, The Scene: Frank tells Raimy to prepare for the future they can't fix
Aimee Hicks:
Frank talks to Raimy about preparing for a future where they can’t set things right. This was a poignant scene between father and daughter. In the last episode, Raimy begged her dad to always be honest with her. Here he was doing just that. He truthfully doesn’t know if they can fix what they’ve messed up. Doing harm to Raimy’s future pains him for the simple fact that it hurts his little girl. Even though she’s a grown adult in her time, in his she’s still the little girl he’s responsible for. He has a soft but firm tone with her throughout. He wanted her to hear him and understand what he was saying. These talking scenes are always brilliantly done. Even though Peyton List and Riley Smith don’t share the screen they always find a way to convey the emotions they are each feeling. They can connect without even being in the scene together. This scene and scenes like it are acting at its very best. This particular one was just very poignant. It was obvious that he really got through to Raimy and she heard him. By her very nature, she’ll fight to avoid that future, but she does now understand it’s a possibility she and her dad may not be able to avoid. Beautifully written and acted scene.

GREY'S ANATOMY, "Roar", October 27, 2016, Actors: Caterina Scorsone, Justin Chambers, Ellen Pompeo, The Scenes: Amelia tells Alex about her dead son & The final scene in the bedroom
Klutzy girl:
Amelia breaks and tells Alex about her dead son. I've been waiting for her Private Practice past to show up and it didn't disappoint at all. Caterina Scorsone knocked it out of the park and the scene was absolutely heartbreaking. I'm glad Alex was so supportive and encouraged her to talk to Owen. And she should tell him the truth because Owen will absolutely not hate her for this trauma. He'll be understanding. Everything about this scene was jus amazing.
Marko Pekic: Mer and Alex have great chemistry and this scene being so simple and honest made it just exceptional. After the heartbreaking case he handled that day Alex realized they need to enjoy every single moment ahead of them. Also the plea for Mer to be kinder to Amelia was adorable. She does talk a lot.

LUCIFER, "Weaponizer", October 24, 2016, Actors: Tom Ellis, Tricia Helfer, The Scene: Lucifer returns to his penthouse after killing Uriel
Aimee Hicks:
Heartbreaking is the best way to describe this scene. The way Tom Ellis and Tricia Helfer played this moment between mother and son was so sincere and full of emotions. Tom was nearly unrecognizable as he pulled himself back into the sanctuary of his home. Of all the places he could have gone in that moment he went to seek out his mom. He was distraught in such a way that a part of him was just shattered beyond recognition. Like any human would do, he went to his mom who is the one person who will always love him no matter what he does. This was a particularly tough situation for his mom because she has to comfort one son while mourning another. Made even worse is the fact that she lost her son at the hands of the one she has to comfort. It’s a horrible situation for both of them to be in. No matter what her intentions may ultimately be, in that moment she was just a mother. I don’t think we know her true intentions yet, but at least we do know that she does care for Lucifer without question. Or, well, at least that’s what it seems, but who knows with that woman. But for the sake of this scene, the reason it was the best is because it was a very raw and honest moment. Ellis and Helfer connected in such a way that they easily sold her as a heartbroken mom and him a soul shattered son. The whole scene was just incredible and so powerful. Also picked by Laura Markus
Diana Paolucci: After killing Uriel, Lucifer realizes he's a monster after all. That scene really touched my heart. You can see he's the Devil, he's always acted around humans like he knew what he's doing but at that time he didn't. The feeling of losing Chloe made him lose his mind, he also couldn't surrender to Uriel's threath and send his mom back to Hell again. Remember, he's the Devil. Killing Uriel and Lucifer breaking in tears reminds me of the one of the original sins, when Cain kills his brother Abel. The second season of amazing and full of meanings.
Prpleight: I don’t think I’ll ever get used to the stories that depict the archangels as siblings. But when Lucifer fell into his mother’s arms sobbing because he’s killed his little brother I was reminded that this wasn’t a fight between soldiers but a fight between siblings.

MARVEL'S AGENTS OF SHIELD, "Lockup", October 25, 2016, Actors: Chloe Bennet, Ming-Na Wen, The Scene: May talks to Daisy
Justyna K:
It's been a long time coming and I think it was the first real step towards helping Daisy find her place in the world again. The relationship between May and Daisy has been one of my favorites on the show, the friendship, guidance, the mentorship. Daisy has been lost for a while now, broken (both physically and mentally) and she prefers to keep distance from everyone who cares about her. In a way, she's making a similar choice to the one May did years ago. And they both don't quite work. Because of Coulson. And because of their team. You don't get to choose the people who love you and in these past years this group became close like a family and they don't give up on each other. Somebody had to say it and Daisy had to hear it, and who better to tell the truth than May? I really loved all the little moments with these two and Coulson throughout the episode. Just a little hope might make the most significant difference after all. Kudos to cast & crew for this great hour!

NCIS LOS ANGELES, "Ghost Gun", October 23, 2016, Actors: Daniela Ruah, Eric Christian Olsen, The Scene: Kensi wakes up
Justyna K:
Kensi and Deeks have a way of stealing the show for me. Both actors are absolutely fantastic, especially in these emotional moments like this one, and the story of their characters continues to be a powerful journey. Since the season premiere Kensi has been in a coma, after suffering a serious injury, which complete extent we still don't know. Finally, in the last minutes of the hour, Kensi wakes up, with Deeks staying by her side, and quickly discovers she's not quite alright. As the two realize her problems with a hand, so much can be read from their faces. Kensi's scared, waking up in the hospital, seeing the damage and not being able to move like always is quite a terrifying experience. She's barely talking and all of it is clearly too much for her to take at the moment. Deeks, on the other side, remains as calm and comforting as he possibly can, happy to see her awake and trying to help her get through this painful time. It's both heartwarming and heartbreaking to see these two in this situation but I can't wait to see them face these troubles together and become even stronger as a result. Incredible performance by Daniela Ruah and Eric Christian Olsen. Kudos to these two & the crew for the wonderful work on the scene and the show!

PITCH, "Alfonzo Guzman-Chavez", October 27, 2016, Actors: Mo McRae, Kylie Bunbury
The Scene: Blip gets to stay on the Padres
Jessica VanWinkle:
I was nervous watching Ginny and Blip watch their phones counting down until the trade deadline passed. Ginny and Blip’s friendship is amazing (one of the best ever), and I was so excited when he wasn’t traded. Ginny and Blip hug and celebrate and it’s clear this friendship isn’t going anywhere.

RECTIFY, "A House Divided", October 26, 2016, Actors: Aden Young and more, The Scene: Daniel talks about his loneliness
Nirat Anop:
The way Daniel spoke about being isolated from this world, “existing” in a strange way was incredibly believable, you rarely see a man on TV act in such a manner. I was in tears listening to his struggle. The way he poured his heart out, the vulnerability he showcased was so powerful, to become “unglued”, to lose yourself as a result of loneliness, detachment and the inability to interact with anything but just hear voices through the grates is nothing but heartbreaking. To even write this down, not fully comprehend the suffering he endured is difficult. The combination of Aden Young's phenomenal performance and the music slowly becoming eerier as Daniel talks of his ego disintegrating until finally becoming so haunting, he then questions “If I am dead then why I am still so goddamn lonely?”. You can never truly understand the words I share here with you now if you haven’t been on this journey with Daniel if you don't truly understand how much pain he's been through. The emotional weight of the scene is unparalleled. It was by far one of the most incredible scenes of TV I have ever watched. Aden Young. A name so few would know yet so many should.

SCORPION, "Plight at the Museum", October 24, 2016, Actors: Elyes Gabel, Eddie Kaye Thomas, Jadyn Wong, The Scene: Happy, Walter, and Toby move in together
Prpleight:
Toby and Happy are finally a happy couple expecting their first child. Unfortunately, Mom is in a green card marriage with another man. Walter still has to get his citizenship and the only way for that to happen is convince their case officer the marriage is real. When Toby suggested that Walter and Happy would have to really live together to make the illusion look real I knew we’d get some funny scenes. I was expecting to see a very uncomfortable Walter and Happy sharing a bed. Toby in the floor next to the bed was completely unexpected and hilarious.

SUPERGIRL, "Welcome to Earth", October 24, 2016, Actors: Chyler Leigh, Floriana Lima and more, The Scene: Alex and Maggie at the alien bar
Aimee Hicks:
This was a fantastic episode that introduced a lot of new characters, but by far, my favorite has got to be Maggie Sawyer. The immediate chemistry between Alex and Maggie made their fast road to friendship realistic. As Maggie pointed out later in the episode they really do make a great team. The scene at the bar was a big step forward in what promises to be a beautifully complex story for these two as they, and the audience, wait to see if they can make this friendship into something more. This whole scene beautifully showed off the personalities of each character. It also served to quickly introduce the audience to who Maggie is as a person. One of my favorite moments in this scene was when Alex is going for her gun and Maggie doesn’t hesitate to grab her arm to stop her. I also found it fascinating that she used a very intimately soft yet firm tone with Alex in order to get her to stand down. It was a very intimate moment for two people who just met. They had a very immediate connection which was very clear throughout this entire scene. The little glances Alex kept giving her new friend indicated that with each passing moment Maggie was gaining more respect from her. They are a good pair and with a little guidance from the writers, they could turn into a very dynamic couple. Basically, every scene in this episode could be deemed the best, but this is the one that I keep coming back to. Chyler Leigh and Floriana Lima took what could have been an awkward moment between two characters and turned it into a very dynamic first meeting. Also picked by Samantha Benjamin

THE GOLDBERGS, "Stefan King", October 26, 2016, Actors: Hayley Orrantia, Troy Gentile, The Scene: Erica thanks Barry for getting Geoff to cheer her up (picked by Samantha Benjamin)

THE REAL O'NEALS, "The Real Halloween", October 25, 2016, Actors: Martha Plimpton, Noah Galvin, The Scene: Kenny and Eileen's talk at the end (picked by Laura Markus)

THE VAMPIRE DIARIES, "Today Will Be Different", October 28, 2016, Actors: Paul Wesley, Candice King, The Scene: Stefan proposes to Caroline
Marko Pekic:
We all knew it was coming but no one saw it coming this early in the season. The chemistry between the two is undeniable and the whole set up was perfect. The room he prepped for her kids, the ring, the light and them giggling and kissing through out was just perfect. P.S. It was odd to hear The Fray's song in the background but it is a great song.

THE WALKING DEAD, "The Day Will Come When You Won't Be", October 23, 2016, Actors: Andrew Lincoln, Steven Yeun, Jeffrey Dean Morgan and more, The Scenes: Negan breaks Rick & Glenn's death
Kollin Lore:
It's so hard to choose a scene, but The Walking Dead premiere needs to be represented here, so choose we must. The scene when Negan tells Rick to cut Carl's arm off was absolutely tense, it had my heart beating out of my chest. Lincoln brought his acting to a whole other level here as we see a different side in Rick we had never seen before - a Rick on his knees, begging and totally submissive. It was visceral and heart wrenching.
Diana Paolucci: Glenn's death. This came out literally almost unexpected. I mean, readers of the comic book knew it would happen eventually at some point in the show, but you can't expect it in THAT horrible way. I haven't read the comics, so, you can guess how I felt. How Maggie felt. Negan hit me more than twice, and he just didn't feel anything. That was heartbreaking. I wonder if Maggie will lose his baby. Glenn, we will miss you.

THIS IS US, "The Game Plan", October 25, 2016, Actors: Justin Hartley, Chrissy Metz and more, The Scenes: The ending scene & Kevin explains life to his nieces
Nirat Anop: This scene added an extra, more profound dimension to Kevin than I ever expected. The way he talks about life and how interconnected it all is was beautiful. It's so rare a child is explained about life in such a manner, it makes you realize like every episode has been doing so, that this show is so special. I don't really hear much pieces of dialogue like this, about how life is always with you, that's there's "no dying, there's just us". Can you remember the last time you felt truly moved by network TV recently, in this manner, in regards to life? I can't. Even that short scene of Randall holding his biological father's hat, implying he passed on, whilst this dialogue is spoken, just makes you cry. Life is so precious. Also picked by Marko Pekic & Diana Paolucci
Prpleight: I knew when Kevin, self absorbed as he is, handed his nieces his script to read with him, that there was going to be a problem. As an apology/piece offering he shows them a painting he made to express how the play made him feel when he read it. The painting looked like a 5 year-old just threw paint at the paper, but what the painting said to him was beautiful. I couldn’t help but think it will make the loss of their grandfather a little easier for them to process.
Klutzy girl: Kevin shows his painting to his nieces and explains that it's about life, family, and death. This show kills me every week and it just keeps getting better.
Jessica VanWinkle: The ending scene where the family is cheering for the Steelers (in the past) and Kate and Toby are watching the Steelers in the present. Football was obviously a big part of the family, and it was a special thing between Kate and Jack. I loved that the parents passed the love of football down to their kids.

WESTWORLD, "Dissonance Theory", October 23, 2016, Actors: Evan Rachel Wood, Thandie Newton, Anthony Hopkins and more, The Scenes: Dr. Ford lets Theresa know that he's God & Hector helps retrieve a bullet out of Maeve
Kollin Lore:
Hopkins performance in this scene is downright scary. In the sequence, he threatens Theresa telling her not to get in his way. He reminds her that he created everything about Westworld right down to the blades of grass and he knows everything about all his employees and guests, which he demonstrates by having Theresa sit in the same chair she sat in as a child and warning her about getting too close to Bernard in their secret relationship. Hopkins says all this in an ominously, subtle, but creepy way that gave me chills down my spine. Westworld hasn't shown outright yet that he is evil, but it has hinted, in this scene in particular, that he may be the worst of the worst.
Darth Locke: Like in previous episodes, this one had a lot of interesting scenes (and some interesting Bad Robot references), but I found this scene the most interesting because of the way Maeve has gone about proving her visions and has begun to use Westworld's narrative's mythology to draw her own conclusions. This happens to relate to Hector who comes upon her at just the right time. Hector also seemed to be underestimated by The Man in Black in that his willingness to help Maeve and because his lines of dialogue sound like lines of "truth". But moreover, Maeve just goes straight to source! In addition this scene between them was also about mixing pleasure with pain and shows some seeds planted in wanting to think about what happens when those two things become entangled and can't be differentiated?!
Nirat Anop: From a human perspective, Maeve's defiance, her need for Hector to cut her in the area she believed was once shot, is extraordinary. Her bravery defies any fear (regardless of being a host, she believes she's human, and to be human is to always question, something I find so well done by both Maeve and Dolores). Thandie Newton has been nothing but excellent and this scene was one of the best (along with Anthony Hopkins' God scene). The confirmation that she's not crazy and that "none of this matters" is truly great, it's a strong narrative choice that moves the plot in an interesting direction as well as showing you just how strong Maeve is. Also, the chemistry between Thandie Newton and Rodrigo Santoro was insane.
