Ratings Breakdown:
CBS minus football is still the destination to beat on Thursday, but all was not perfect last night following the return of its regularly scheduled entertainment-themed programming. “The Big Bang Theory,” of course, was the top-rated show of the evening at a 9.6 rating/16 share in the household overnights in the 8 p.m. half-hour. Comparably, that bested NBC’s competing “Superstore” (#3: season low 2.8/ 5) by a whopping 243 percent. But the series-premiere of comedy “The Great Indoors” slipped by an extensive 41 percent at 8:30 p.m., with a 5.7/ 9. And that trailed the second half of ABC’s competing “Grey’s Anatomy” (5.8/ 9) by one-tenth of a rating point.
Like NBC before it, which had great difficulty capitalizing on the strength of comedies like “Friends” and “Seinfeld,” CBS has yet to find anything worthy out of “The Big Bang Theory.”
Next on CBS was the fourth season premiere of “Mom” at a typical (and dominant) 4.9/ 8 at 9 p.m., which is acceptable. And that led into the second season premiere of “Life in Piece” at a second-place 4.2/ 7 at 9:30 p.m. But a 4.2/ 8 in the household overnights for the series-premiere of “Pure Genius,” despite winning the 10 p.m. hour and holding the “Life in Pieces” lead-in, is a true disappointment given the ample promotion. Since most new series drop 10 to 20 percent in week two, I would not anticipate all that much for “Pure Genius.”
On ABC, aforementioned “Grey’s Anatomy” (#2: 5.8/ 9 at 8 p.m. ) led into a distant third-place 2.8/ 4 for “Notorious” at 9 p.m., which just had its episode order reduced to 10. Tick, tock…the cancellation clock is ticking. And “Notorious” led into diluted “How To Get Away With Murder” at a 3.1/ 5 at 10 p.m., which with weaker lead-in support slipped by 38 percent from the year-ago evening.
Over at NBC, although the 8-9 p.m. comedies – “Superstore”: 2.8/ 5 (#3) and “The Good Place” (#3: 2.7/ 4) – were lacking, sophomore drama “Chicago Med” perked up to a dominant 4.5/ 7 at 9 p.m., which was 67 percent above lead-in “The Good Place.” Capping off the evening for the Peacock net was “The Blacklist” at a second-place 3.6/ 6 at 10 p.m., which versus the 4.7/ 7 in the Thursday 9 p.m. hour on the year ago evening was down by 23 percent.
Elsewhere, Fox could not compete with its drama pairing of relocated “Rosewood” (#4: 2.5/ 4) and newbie “Pitch” (#4: 2.1/ 3). And The CW featured sophomore “D.C. Legends of Tomorrow” (#5: 1.3/ 2) and veteran “Supernatural” (#5: 1.2/ 2), which are certainly compatible.
