Ratings Breakdown:
It was not the highest rated match-up by any means, but the Indianapolis Colts at the Houston Texans on “Sunday Night Football” led NBC to more overnight victory. The game averaged an estimated 9.0 rating/15 share from 8:30-11 p.m., which compared to the New England Patriots at the Indianapolis Colts on the year-ago evening (14.6/23 on 10/18/15) was down by 38 percent. As a reminder, results for any live sporting evening are always approximate.
Fox also benefited by football, with a primetime football overrun in the 7 p.m. half-hour at a massive 16.3/28 in the household overnights, followed by the combination of football and “The OT” at an also dominant 12.6/21 at 7:30 p.m.
Fox granddaddy “The Simpsons” got a boost courtesy of football, with a 4.7/ 7 in the overnights at 8 p.m. But recent entry “Son of Zorn,” a hybrid of live action and animation, dipped to a 2.4/ 4 (#3) at 8:30 p.m., followed by “Family Guy” (#4: 2.3/ 4) and “The Last Man on Earth” (#4: 1.7/ 3) at typical depressed overnight levels from 9-10 p.m.
Older-skewing CBS has a respectable Sunday care of its combination of “60 Minutes” (#2: 7.7/13), relocated “NCIS: Los Angeles” (#2: 7.1/11) and “Madam Secretary” (#2: 6.2/10) from 7-10 p.m. But “Elementary,” which should be in its last season at this point, dipped to a 3.7/ 6 at 10 p.m. (#2).
There is nothing, unfortunately, positive to report about ABC which featured its deteriorating combination of “America’s Funniest Home Videos” (#3: 2.7/ 5), “Once Upon a Time” (#4: 2.3/ 4), “Secrets and Lies” (#3: 2.4/ 4) and sophomore “Quantico” (#3: 2.3/ 4), which slipped by 38 percent from the 3.7/ 6 on the year-ago evening. The first step for ABC in rebuilding Sunday is recognizing that “Once Upon a Time” needs to conclude.
