Promo & Post Mortem Interview
When Ginny (Kylie Bunbury) was in high school, she actually found a guy friend she could relate to, Jordan (Parker Croft), who moved around a lot in his youth and whose father was an alcoholic that never made it to any of his baseball games. Therefore, Ginny’s father Bill (Michael Beach) implored Jordan’s dad Ray (Reston Williams) to make it to the championship game. In a drunken stupor, Ray slammed his car into oncoming traffic, specifically Bill’s car, causing the death of Ginny’s father — the heartbreaking moment revealed in the premiere.
“Dan [Fogelman] expressed interest early on about experiencing Ginny’s father’s death through the drunk driver’s POV,” executive producer Kevin Falls tells EW. “That morphed into having it be the father of Ginny’s new friend Jordan, which helped us inform Ginny’s fear of abandonment when rumors circulate that Blip might get traded.”
At this point, Falls says, there are no plans to see Jordan again — for instance, during Ray’s trial or even in present day through Ginny’s travels — “but that could change,” the EP adds.
