Grey's Anatomy - Catastrophe and The Cure - Review: "The Big Surprise"

Hello, my fellow Grey's Anatomy fans I'm this week's substitute reviewer as Maxine is out sick and I hope you are ready to dig into all the drama with me. I loved the "Catastrophe and The Cure" throughout, it was a strong second outing setting up the direction of the next couple of episodes. The episode was written by Karin Gist and directed by one of Grey's Anatomy's own, Kevin McKidd.

The beauty of this episode lies in the show's ability to include all cast members and make them strong parts of the episode, even Stephanie had some good scenes. First thought lets start with April and Jackson. April's post C-section incision ruptured so Jackson has to take little Harriet home away from his overprotective Kepner mum. April was so cute and funny with her struggle and Jackson was such a great rock to her mess. The decision to FaceTime and make April sing to Harriet over her tablet was a great idea. Sarah has a sweet voice and I'm glad they didn't overreach with the songs and made it just about April and Harriet.

After Richard encouraged Jackson to make a step up and do the best thing for his daughter he invited April to move in with him. April of course, couldn't say no and choose to move in with Jackson. That smirk on April's face afterwards seemed like a glimpse of hope that she could reunite romantically with her ex-hubby.

Meanwhile, everything else at Greys-Sloan Memorial was about the DeLuca-Karev case. Alex was charged with Felony and Assault in the 2nd degree and we didn't expect that. This a lot harder charge affected Alex quite a bit and from here on things went only downhill for Alex. The pressure came to his head and affected Alex's work. Alex missed a couple of signs which put Zach and his newly transplanted kidney in danger. Zach was sweet and the writers establishing a connection between Alex, Zach and his mom gave the case a lot more weight. Alex always shines through when he has patient involved stories and dialogues. Zach eventually needed 2 surgeries to save the kidney, Miranda and Mer took care of them. This coast Alex his surgeon job, but Miranda couldn't let one of her boys go and employed Alex as a doctor in the Danny Duquette's Clinic.

The breaking point of Alex's journey this week was his confrontation with Jo at the Shepard-Hunt dinner party. Jo schooled Alex right, him calling her trash last week was a low point and I'm not sure if they will ever fully recover from this. This made Alex finally see all the mistakes he made and that it wouldn't just go away. This Alex-centric story was something I was wishing for a while now and I'm so happy it is so juicy and great, can't wait to see where all the characters will end up when it ends.

The involvement of Miranda in this whole story was well executed. Miranda's black and white point of view graced her character but the original interns always made her see gray. She can't stop being their Momma her speech to Alex about being the Big Surprise was great and so on point.

Our leading lady Meredith was busy buffering for Alex and keeping her glass house made of lies intact. This was a new situation for Meredith, usually, she was the mess and her person had to take care of her and fighting for Alex was a lot of work. Mer really needs to take some fixing classes from Olivia Pope, cause that attempt of convincing DeLuca from dropping the charges was awful. Later Mer fixed that almost blackmail by inviting DeLuca to Zach's surgery. Mer feels trapped in this whole situation and while she is loyal to Alex I'm not sure how long she will be able to handle the pressure.

On the other side, I really wonder how the Mer-Maggie-Riggs triangle will play out. At this point, a major sisterly blowout is bound to happen but do we really need to take such a long road to it. Meridith warned Riggs about Maggie wanting to date him and I didn't like it. We all know Meredith is bad at being a sister but at one point she has to stop digging that grave and step up. I really hope we won't have to wait too long for that.

Maggie being all hot and bothered about Riggs is very entertaining, but some of her statements made it seem that she is more interested in crossing the finish line but doesn't really care about who will be her partner.

SIDE NOTES:
* Richard as Miranda's eyes and ears was quite hilarious. I'm always in for more Richard.
* After the Shepard-Hunt dinner party, Amelia seemed to have finally broke Owen's shields and let him reconsider his bromance with Riggs. I liked Owen during the dinner party, Light Owen is a lot better.
* Kelly McCreary looked HOT in that dress at the dinner party.
* Stephanie stepping up for her friend was great. Those simple two scenes worked very well. I really grew to enjoy Stephanie scenes last season and I hope the show continues to give her meaningful stories.

A very eventful and emotional episode is behind us and the story hasn't even reached its climax. In the next episode Arizona returns and brings some new heat to the DeLuca-Karev situation, but in the meantime feel free to sound off in the comment section and let me know what did you think of this weeks episode.
