Fresh off the Boat is peaking! Season 3 started really strong and this season's third outing wasn't a disappointed either. Last season's Halloween episode was one to remember and "Louisween" even though not flawless was essentially a terrific episode exploiting all family members and giving each character enough screen time to make a lasting impression.
Quick Recap:
- Louis, as indicated in the title was completely into Halloween and tried to transfer the hype onto a very grumpy Jessica.
- Emery and Evan had a major issue deciding what costumes to choose for this Halloween.
- Meanwhile, Eddie and his crew were invited to their first high school party hosted by Eddie's old flame, Nicole. Sadly the party was a snooze fest, but Nicole and Eddie were still able to get arrested by the police.
What worked:
- The scenes involving all the family members, from freeing Eddie from jail to them gathering for the November 1st trick or treat you can really feel family chemistry within the cast.
- All of Louis' attempts to scare or make Jessica care for Halloween. Jessica's bland face at all the of Louis' attempts to scare Jessica. She truly enjoyed ruining every single of his jokes. Special kudos to Reba and the kidnapping joke lmao so hard.
- Louis' costume, Pete Vampres. So random but so amazing, Randall Park induced life into those lines.
Just lock it down before 5pm. I wanne be out Trick or Treating before my curles loose their bounce.
- Eddie and Nicole scenes. Eddie and Nicole are adorable together and it was a nice turn to see Eddie be totally involved into the party storyline and didn't try to impress her or pine over her. The amount of hype Nicole expressed over the fake rumors was just hilarious.
- Eddie and his crew. Such a perfect group of weirdos. Their costumes were amazing and those kids deliver great lines in a very convincing matter. Dash Williams as Brian was especially good this week. Even though his lines were a tiny bit creepy his energy is impeccable and always charms a smile on my face.
- The Emery-Evan story. I can't praise Ian Chen enough but Forrest Wheeler didn't slack behind in this episode either. Evan's fight to be more than his brother's sidekick was adorable and his costume ideas were hilarious. He looked so precious as Judge Lance Ito, great reference to the American Crime Story hype. The line of the evening goes to Evan of course:
I just need one Halloween where I can feel the ground beneath my feet.
What didn't work:
- Jessica's attempt at writing. The story wasn't really appealing or funny and mostly just disturbed the flow of the episode. Not even Constance Wu with all her charms could salvage that story.
- Honey's appearances. I usually enjoy Honey a lot more but besides her inviting the Huangs in on their Nov 1st Trick or Treat quest, I really didn't see the purpose of her appearance.
Ranking the costumes:
1. Louis as Pete Vampres
2. Evan as Judge Lance Ito
3. Nicole and her friends as The Spice Girls
4. Walter as The commercial Grandma
5. Trent as Bob Knight
6. Eddie as Sydney Dean
7. Emery as Indiana Jones
8. Jessica as JessCat
