Ash Vs. Evil Dead - The Morgue - Review - “Brock Williams Has Wood”

I am really enjoying Lee Major’s portrayal of Brock Williams. It explains a lot about Ash’s personality/behavior. And we also found out that the 30 year estrangement might not have been just because his dad didn’t stand up for him when he returned from the cabin. Ash sees one of his high-school conquests heading into the family home for a hot date with Brock, Ash utters the phrase “Not again.” Hopefully we won’t have to wait too long to find out what that’s about.

Ruby reiterates that her children pose an existential threat to the world without really telling us what exactly that threat is. I was hoping we’d be getting a good handle on what the stakes are by this point. The first thing that needs to be done is to retrieve the Necronomicon. Ruby hid the book in a dead body (of course) because it would prevent her children getting its scent.

Pablo convinces Ash to leave Ruby at the house because he doesn’t trust her (no one does) while Ash and Kelly go to get the Necronomicon. Pablo let’s them believe that he wants to question Ruby and find out what she’s hiding. What Pablo really wants to know is what having the Necronomicon attached to his face did to him. He wants to know why he’s seeing weird freaky things…well things freakier than Deadites.

When Ruby realizes that Pablo is having premonitions, Ruby strings him up and cuts his throat with a fingernail. Turns out that that was a premonition and the fingernail is a clue. Ruby tells everyone that her children want the book. Ruby’s children want the Necronomicon so that they can raise up their father, Baal.

Ash and Kelly dutifully head for the morgue to retrieve the Necronomicon. Kelly waits as Ash goes into autopsy room. Ash rather quickly realizes he neglected to ask Ruby which corpse he’s looking for. Murphy’s law being what it is and, let's face it, Ash being the sharp tack he is, Ash has used a chainsaw to cut open every single body in the room when he realizes the last corpse is the one holding the book. He didn’t even need to bother with the chainsaw. But then would we really enjoy this show as much if Ash had looked first?

The problems start when Ash tries to pull the book out of the corpse. The corpse doesn’t want to let it go. So Ash winds up in a fight with the corpse’s colon. Oddly enough, that’s not the worst part of Ash’s evening. Before the fight is over Ash is wearing the corpse on his head; through the most unpleasant orifice imaginable. He eventually wins the battle royale and discovers that his father’s date is a Deadite. He realizes that Pablo is in trouble.

The urgency of a Deadite hunting Pablo doesn’t stop Ash from telling Kelly about how they kept the Sheriff from reporting Ash and his buddies when they beat him up in high school. Kelly knocked the Sheriff out when he laid hands on her. Ash pours some of Kelly’s soda on his crotch to ensure he wouldn’t report the incident.

As Ash and Kelly head back to the house, they nearly hit a couple of high school punks. They get their revenge by stealing the Delta. Of course that’s where Ash was hiding the Necronomicon, so that quest isn’t over yet. At least we know what the stakes are.

It was a fun half hour. That colon fight has got to be the only one in cinematic history. On this show it seemed a natural place to take that fight. I loved everyone’s reaction to his smell after the colon fight, even Ruby's. Ash avoided actually hitting the teens because Kelly was riding with her head hanging of the Delta’s window.

What did you guys think of the episode?.
