BACK TO THE FUTURE | Remember the message that Legends‘ Martin and Jax discovered from a circa 2056 Barry Allen? During the crossover it will get back to the source, when the present-day speedster “finds out” about the voicemail he will one day send, Victor Garber reveals.
HOW BIG IS IT? | “It’s not twice as large, it’s like 32 times [bigger],” Arrow star Stephen Amell says of the four-way event, which required some scheduling heroics. “Our first A.D., Ken Shane, handed me this big piece of paper that was just five straight weeks of where I was going each day,” Amell recalls. “It was hard work. I didn’t have a day off, but there was a spirit of teamwork this year that made it palatable.”

On an early October afternoon, the casts of The CW’s “Arrowverse” serials gathered in an airport hangar on the outskirts of Vancouver B.C. for a historic event. From Arrow, there was Stephen Amell (Oliver Queen, aka the show’s emerald archer), David Ramsey (Diggle/Spartan), Willa Holland (Thea Queen/Speedy) and Emily Bett Rickards (Felicity Smoak). From The Flash, there was Grant Gustin (Barry Allen, aka the show’s scarlet speedster), Candice Patton (Iris West), Tom Cavanagh (H.R. Wells), Danielle Panabaker (Dr. Caitlin Snow) and Carlos Valdes (Cisco/Vibe). From Legends of Tomorrow, there was Brandon Routh (Ray Palmer/The Atom), Caity Lotz (Sara Lance/White Canary), Dominic Purcell (Mick Rory/Heat Wave), Franz Drameh (Jax, one half of Firestorm), Victor Garber (Dr. Martin Stein, the other half of Firestorm). And from Supergirl, there was the maiden of might herself, Melissa Benoist, the only actor dressed in their caped crusader colors. (Must be dry cleaning day at the Hall of Justice.)

Gustin, who has taken part in every crossover episode so far, promised that this new one will be unlike any that you’ve seen. “This one’s just bigger,” he said. “Almost everyone interacts with every other character at a certain point.” Gustin also teased the upcoming arrival of this season’s second big bad on The Flash: Speedster villain, Savitar, is coming “very, very soon,” Gustin promised. “He’s the god of motion,” Berlanti added, “so Flash is up against his biggest foe yet.” But Berlanti isn’t going to turn back. “I’m not sure that we can [return to the original timeline], given what we’ve established,” he said. “If we’re not challenging ourselves and creating new territory and new obstacles for the characters, I think it’s less rewarding to watch and probably less rewarding to play. We like to grow ourselves and grow our characters.”

Arrow Boss Teases 100th Episode; Reveal Crossover Starts at the end of Supergirl
In the crossover, the heroes will team up to fight against the Dominators, who in the comics were a technologically advanced alien race that wanted to invade Earth and eliminate the threat posed by unpredictable metahumans — and they have similar motivations during the crossover. “Once the heroes realize that they’re up against aliens, they decide that they need an alien on their side,” Guggenheim says. “Fortunately, Barry knows a really nice one. I don’t think it’s a big shock that between Barry and Cisco, and all their experiences with Earth-2 and the multi-verse, that they can pluck her from Earth-CBS.” Guggenheim also revealed that the crossover will actually kick off at the end of an episode of Supergirl, where Cisco (Carlos Valdes) and Barry (Grant Gustin) basically enlist Kara’s help. “Some people call it a four-way crossover because it involves four shows; my ulcer requires me to call it a three-part crossover,” Guggenheim explains. “The story that’s being told has a beginning, middle, and end: a beginning in Flash, a middle in Arrow, and an end in Legends. But Supergirl is very much a part of the whole thing, so we are crossing over four shows — four shows in three parts.” In addition to original cast members Jamey Sheridan, Katie Cassidy, and Susanna Thompson returning, Guggenheim revealed that John Barrowman and Neal McDonough will both reprise their roles as Malcolm Merlyn and Damien Darhk, respectively, in the 100th episode. “I haven’t seen the episode all cut together yet, but it has some incredibly iconic moments,” he says. “It is a love letter to the show, it draws on all previous 99 episodes pretty much. Everyone who we could have in the episode, from a scheduling point of view, is in the episode. Even the people who we couldn’t have, because of conflicting schedules, are represented. At the same time, you’ve got Flash and Supergirl; that’s an enormous amount of fun. Certainly the recruits also play a very large role, an important role, in the episode. I’m really excited about it.” By recruits, Guggenheim is referring to the new Team Arrow, which includes Curtis (Echo Kellum), Wild Dog (Rick Gonzalez), Ragman (Joe DiNicol), and Evelyn Sharp (Madison McLaughlin). With that said, Guggenheim had high praise for Stephen Amell’s performance in the landmark hour. “There’s one moment in it that I think is probably Stephen’s finest performance to date,” he says. “This one scene, that really has two moments within the one scene, it will break your heart. It will take your heart, pull it out, and stomp it on the floor. It’s very, very affecting. It’s all on Stephen’s back. It’s incredible. Willa [Holland]’s amazing in the episode. Everyone obviously brought their A game to it. I’m really, really excited about it. It’s the 100th episode!”
Arrow's Marc Guggenheim teases 'Most Ambitious' Crossover Yet
In the comics, specifically in Invasion!, the Dominators are technologically advanced aliens who form a coalition with various other races to invade Earth and eliminate the threat posed by unpredictable metahumans. “I will say that their goal is very closely related to what was established in the comics, and it does have to do with metahumans,” Arrow and Legends executive producer Marc Guggenheim told EW on our SiriusXM radio show Superhero Insider. “It’s very, very faithful to the comics.” The arrival of the Dominators will force the Arrowverse’s superheroes to team up for what Guggenheim calls their “most ambitious” crossover yet. “I think it’s massively different,” he says of the four-way team-up. “The first crossover we did was two separate storylines that had a slight tangential connection to each other. Then last year, the crossover we did was a two-parter that told one complete story with a beginning, middle, and end across Flash and Arrow, but it also had the work of setting up Legends of Tomorrow.” “This year,” Guggenheim continues, “we’re doing by far the most ambitious crossover we’ve ever done. It’s basically a huge three-part story that also brings in Supergirl, so it’s crossing over all four shows. It’s telling one big epic movie of a story. It’s not setting up any other spin-offs, it’s just big, bombastic, huge action. There’s also some really poignant character moments. There’s a lot of plot lines, particularly I would say in Flash and Legends, that come to fruition in the crossover. It’s by far the most ambitious thing we’ve ever attempted. I want to say it’s by far one of the most ambitious things anyone in network television has ever attempted. It’s completely insane.”
CW/DC Superhero Crossover Details Revealed
Following a press screening of Monday’s episode of Supergirl, executive producer Andrew Kreisberg revealed how some of the characters will react to Kara, a.k.a. Supergirl (Melissa Benoist), given she’s one of very few aliens — if not the first — that they’ve come across. “Some people, like Barry [Grant Gustin], already know her, so Barry’s completely cool with her,” Kreisberg says, referring to The Flash-Supergirl crossover from last year. “Some people are instantly charmed by her; I think Sara’s [Caity Lotz] got a little crush on her. Diggle [David Ramsey], as always, just when he thinks he’s seen it all, there’s a moment in it where somebody says, ‘This is Supergirl,’ and they say, ‘What’s so super about her?’ and she just lifts off the ground. Dig’s like, ‘I’m convinced.’” But not everyone in the Arrowverse may be as welcoming. “Part of Oliver’s [Stephen Amell] journey in those episodes is he’s kind of hit his breaking point for things he’s willing to accept,” Kreisberg says. “He’s had Mirakuru soldiers, the Lazarus Pit, magic, and Damien Darhk, but flying aliens who can incinerate you with their eyes is one beyond the pale for him. He’s keeping his distance, which is a very Oliver thing to do. Even Kara comments, ‘Does he not like me?’ Barry’s like, ‘No, that’s kind of how he treats everybody.’” Oliver will certainly have to get used to the idea of aliens, considering the Dominators are the crossover’s villains. In the comics, specifically in Invasion!, the Dominators are a technologically advanced alien race who form a coalition with various other races to invade Earth, all in the name of eliminating the threat posed by unpredictable metahumans. The Daxamites were part of the coalition, and the newly arrived Mon-El (Chris Wood) on Supergirl hails from Daxam. Coincidence?
