2 Broke Girls - And the Two Openings (Parts 1 & 2) - Review: "We're Hallway People Now"

Hello Everyone! Welcome to the first review of 2 Broke Girls, Season 6! 2BG is one of my favorite comedies on the air right now and I am so so so excited to be reviewing it each week for you all.

The two part season premiere opens with Max and Caroline on the hunt for a bartender so that they can open their dessert bar. They are then denied a liquor license because of a small mistake Caroline made, but when they go to fix it, they are spitefully denied by J Petto (Andy Dick), the street performer who tried to sue them back in season 2. The girls realize that they can use the license from the diner because they are part owners now, but on their dessert bar’s opening night, J Petto shows up and shuts them down (for 14 business days) because that is actually not allowed. He also slaps them (because they own the diner) with a $25,000 fine, which prompts the girls to give the diner back to Han, who had been doing random odd jobs to try and make the money to buy the diner back. Meanwhile, Max is still reeling from her break up with Randy, but they are still talking and having FaceTime break up sex, despite the objections of Caroline. Finally, Sophie’s baby is due any day and when she finally goes into labor, she ends up sneezing and giving birth, causing Oleg to miss it. The girls and Sophie then stage the birth when Oleg gets back so that he doesn’t know he missed it.

Wow, a lot happened in that premiere! As expected, the biggest focus this episode was the opening of Max and Caroline’s new dessert bar. I don’t know about you all, but I was pretty surprised to see how much progress was made in between seasons. The dessert bar itself looks perfect. I love the color scheme and how they expanded the cupcake window space to be a real venue. Additionally, I think this bar feels more like the vibe of the show. Back in season 2 when they opened the first incarnation of Max’s Homemade Cupcakes, I felt as though it was too pretty looking for a show about 2 wonderfully vulgar and ridiculous girls trying to make ends meet and start a business. This version of their business, however, feels way more like the characters we have come to know and love. In terms of story development, I was glad that their big opening was stalled. Part of the reason I love this show is because Max and Caroline are constantly overcoming roadblocks and growing as people as they try to build their business, so I am excited to see them continue to face issues because that will make the moment when they finally do open their dessert bar that much more special. Along those same lines, it was a smart move by the writers to have so many callbacks to past seasons, such as Andy Dick and 2 Chainz’s appearances. That reminded me of just how long this journey has been for the girls and made me even more invested in their success.

Moving on to Max and Randy - I was so glad to see Randy (albeit virtually) throughout the episode. Not only did I love their relationship last season, but because their break up wasn’t a dramatic falling out, it makes sense that they would continue to talk. Though I do love them together and hope to see more of their relationship, I do hope that Caroline gets a significant love interest this season. She has only had two over the course of the series (Candy Andy and Nicolas) as opposed to Max, who has gotten more in the relationship department (Johnny, Deke, Nash, and Randy).

Of course, separate from the (cancelled) dessert bar opening, there was another momentous occasion in this episode: Oleg and Sophie had their baby! So far, the writers have handled Sophie and Oleg’s baby storyline perfectly. Every gag they incorporated, such as Sophie sneezing out the baby or reenacting the birth for Oleg, had me laughing so much. Although often times shows go downhill when they introduce a baby, I think because Oleg and Sophie are such outlandish characters, having a baby will add some more heart into their relationship and make them more three-dimensional.

The only thing I would’ve changed about this episode is to not have Max and Caroline give Han back the diner so quickly. One of my favorite gags running through the episode was Han in different uniforms doing different odd jobs. That’s something that could’ve be a really funny storyline for him throughout the season culminating in him being able to buy back the diner. That being said, I thought this episode was one of Han’s funniest of the entire series. His timing was on point and seeing him doing each random job was hilarious. I hope he gets a recurring love interest or a multi episode storyline so he can have a little more to do than just being the punch line to everyone’s jokes. Also, there wasn’t nearly enough Earl this episode! He’s a great addition to the show, so I hope they continue to have Earl centric episodes down the road.

Overall Grade:
B+. A funny episode that felt momentous and special, though the writers rushed a few of the key storyline developments.

Favorite Quotes:
Han: It was more indulgent then Beyonce’s Lemonade!
Max and Caroline: (Yelling over each other) How dare you! She’s a queen!

Han: Welcome to the Williamsburg Diner! I’ll be your waiter, Han.
Sophie: (To Max and Caroline) …Who’s the new girl?

Max: Oh my god, Han’s middle name is Margaret! Sometime the universe just gives you a gift.

Caroline: More good news!
Sophie: Were you able to get me my room back?
Caroline: No, those days are over. We’re hallway people now.

Han: Here's $300. My earnings after working 12 jobs and being robbed 4 times. Twice by the same girl.

Are you excited to see if the dessert bar is successful? Let me know your thoughts on the premiere in the comments!
