The Strain - Renewed for a 4th and Final Season

The cable network announced Tuesday that it has renewed the vampire drama for a fourth and final season set to air in summer 2017. An episode count has not yet been determined.

From Guillermo del Toro, Carlton Cuse and Chuck Hogan, the series is based on the book trilogy created by del Toro and Hogan. Ahead of the show's 2014 launch, Cuse told reporters that his plan for the series was for season one to cover the first book and that the final two books could be one season each or split into multiple seasons. He said producers were mulling either a three- or five-season run. However, in August of this year Cuse told press that the show was sold with a three-season plan, with talk after the renewal about a potential five-season run. "We're in the process of trying to figure out creatively how many more episodes we have," he said. Cuse will make his directorial debut with the upcoming third-season finale.

Said Cuse in a release announcing the final season: “It is a true joy to work at FX where creative intentions always comes first. Our original plan was for the series to last three years. Once we began telling that story it expanded to be more. After finishing the writing on season three, Guillermo, Chuck and I looked at our remaining story and felt the best version could be told in one more season. We have a fantastic plan for an exciting and climatic season four. We are deeply grateful to FX for supporting our vision and for allowing us to end the show on our own timetable.”

The Strain becomes the latest FX series to end its run. The cable network recently announced that Tyrant would not return after its third season and Denis Leary comedy Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll was canceled after its second season. The cabler's drama roster now consists of The Americans, American Crime Story, American Horror Story, Fargo and the upcoming Taboo, Legion and Feud.

"We sincerely thank Carlton Cuse, Guillermo del Toro, Chuck Hogan and their creative team as well as the fantastic cast for three exciting seasons of The Strain,” FX president of original programming Nick Grad said. “Though we’re sad to see it go, we fully support the way in which they are crafting the fourth season’s dramatic conclusion.”
