04:50 - Superior Donuts - Katey Sagal Joins New CBS Comedy Pilot
Thanks I Shot J.R. Ewing for the heads up.
Katey Sagal has been cast opposite Jermaine Fowler and Judd Hirsch in CBS’ multi-camera comedy pilot Superior Donuts. After the upfronts, CBS ordered a new pilot for the project for midseason consideration, recasting several parts. While the role that Sagal will play is regular, she was cast as a guest star as she is in second position to another CBS comedy pilot, the single-camera Furst Born. That project, from ABC Studios and CBS TV Studios, extended the cast options in June as CBS kept it in consideration for a midseason series order. Sagal has a series regular option on Superior Donuts, from CBS TV Studios, so she is expected to continue on the pilot that goes to series.
Written and executive produced by Neil Goldman & Garrett Donovan and Bob Daily based on the play by Tracy Letts, Superior Donuts follows the relationship between the owner of a donut shop, Arthur (Hirsch), his new young employee (Fowler) and their patrons in a gentrifying neighborhood of Chicago.
Sagal will play Randy, a practical street cop for whom Superior Donuts is part of her beat. She’s been on the force a long time and nothing fazes her.
The role was played in the original pilot by Megyn Price. The executives of CBS and CBS TV Studios cast a wide net for the part in the second go-around, considering a number actresses of different ages and ethnicities during an extensive, months-long search.

22:05 - Major Crimes - Season 5 - Camryn Manheim Joins Cast
In the wake of the tragic, brutal courtroom shootout that opened the Sept. 5 episode of TNT’s Major Crimes, the LAPD is down a major player — and thus, a plum position will need to be filled.

22:00 - MOVIES: Shanghai Dawn - Shanghai Noon Sequel in Development with Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson in Talks to Return
MGM is jumping back into the saddle for a new Shanghai Noon sequel.
Jared Hess, the Napoleon Dynamite director, who releases his long-delayed comedy Masterminds later this month, has signed on to direct Shanghai Dawn for MGM.
Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson are in negotiations to reprise their roles for the long-in-the-works third film in the movie series.
Details are being kept buried, but the story is by Miles Millar and Alfred Gough, who wrote 2000’s Shanghai Noon and 2003’s Shanghai Knights. Theodore Riley and Aaron Buchsbaum wrote the script.
The original was an East-meets-West buddy comedy about a Chinese man (Chan) who is forced to team up with an outlaw (Wilson) to save a Chinese princess. The movie turned out to be a surprise hit and led to the London-set sequel.
Spyglass Entertainment is producing. Millar and Gough will executive produce.

19:30 - Code Black - Season 2 - Christa and Neal's Exits Will Not Be Addressed in Season 2
When Code Black returns with its second season later this month, it will be minus doctors Christa Lorenson and Neal Hudson. Also missing? Any explanation of where they went.
“We went back and forth on this a lot,” executive producer Michael Seitzman tells TVLine when asked how the CBS medical drama will address the departures of Bonnie Somerville and Raza Jaffrey. “We toyed with a lot of different versions of addressing it. But none of them seemed to have any real weight.”
Every scenario felt like it was “generated in a writers’ room and not in the real world,” he continues. “We pride ourselves on the show on being as authentic as possible… By not mentioning it at all, it felt like the least offensive way to deal with it,” which, the EP recognizes is “also not realistic.”
Seitzman reasons that “having someone say, ‘Christa moved on to blank, and Neal moved on to blank,'” felt too much like “blatant exposition” and “[not] the way people talk.”
Ultimately, he confesses, “We just never found a good way to address it.”
On the bright side, the ambiguity does leave the door open for Christa and Neal to find their way back to Angels Memorial. Seitzman would “love” for both of their portrayers to make a guest appearance at some point.
Although the actors were let go, “You have to remember these are friends of ours,” Seitzman sighs. “This is tough. Raza and I became good friends. We’re still good friends. He lives right up the street from me, and my wife and I have dinner with him and his wife. We have a personal relationship. That was the hardest phone call I ever made. It was awful for me. I hated making the phone call to Bonnie, too, but Raza and I are really tight.”

04:00 - Star Trek: Discovery - Bryan Fuller Explains the Show Title; Companion Books & Comics Launching
Thanks to darthlocke4 for the heads up.
As announced at Star Trek’s 50th anniversary convention, Mission New York, the new Star Trek: Discovery TV series will launch fans into uncharted territory with a series of companion books and comics.
Kirsten Beyer, a writer and producer on Discovery, revealed during a panel that CBS is working with Simon & Schuster and IDW Publishing to publish these works. Also a writer behind the Star Trek: Voyager novels, Beyer said she’ll be working with David Mack of the Star Trek: Destiny books and Mike Johnson, who wrote the Star Trek Beyond sequel comic, Star Trek: Boldly Go.
Details on the stories are still unknown, but their releases will be timed to the show’s premiere this January on the streaming service CBS All Access.

While there was no new footage or casting announcements made for Star Trek: Discovery at Mission New York today, there was a video from executive producers Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman, which talked a little bit about the choices they’ve made with the new show.
“This ship is called the Discovery for a few reasons,” said Fuller. “Not the least of which is Stanley Kubrick’s contribution to the Discovery on 2001: A Space Odyssey, NASA’s vessel the Discovery, and also the sense of discovery.” He also drew a connection between the meaning of the word to fans, adding that part of the title comes from “what the word ‘discovery’ means to Star Trek audiences who have been promised a future by Gene Roddenberry where we come together as a planet and seek new worlds and new alien races to explore and understand and collaborate with.”
Fuller said that they see this whole show as a chance to “reinvent, re-explore, and reintroduce” the familiar things about Star Trek—especially alien races that audiences would recognize—but also bring a bunch of new ships, aliens, and technology to the Star Trek universe.
As for the decision to make the main character not be the captain this time around, Fuller said in the video: “There have been six series all from the captains’ perspective, and it felt like for this new iteration of Star Trek, we need to look at life on a Starfleet vessel from a new perspective.” The new character is “not a captain,” but is going to have a “whole new dynamic” with the crew. Fuller said that this will let them tell “richer, more complicated” stories about life on the Starfleet vessel.
At the panel in person were Nicholas Meyer and Kirsten Beyer, who both sit in the writers’ room for the new series. They also couldn’t give any specifics about the show, but both agreed that their jobs were to service Bryan Fuller’s vision for the show. Although Meyer did have one piece of advice for a fan looking for assurance that the show would be everything they hoped it would be: “Lower your expectations.” He continued, a bit later, “It is a symbiotic relationship and all I’m suggesting is that if you go with open minds and open hearts, you may be rewarded. Whereas if you go with a set of impossible to realize expectations, which even you cannot specifically define, then we’re bound to fail. And so I’m saying: Get loose.”

00:30 - Fuller House - Season 2 - Filming Wraps
00:30 - GLOW - Britney Young & Sydelle Noel Join Netflix Comedy Series
Britney Young (Those Who Can’t) and Sydelle Noel (Captive) have been cast as series regulars opposite Alison Brie and Marc Maron in G.L.O.W., Netflix’s 10-episode straight-to-series comedy executive produced by Orange Is the New Black creator Jenji Kohan.
Created by Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch, G.L.O.W. was inspired by the real story of the 1980s female wrestling league. Set in Los Angeles and showcasing big hair and body slams, the series tells the fictionalized story of Ruth (Brie), an out-of-work, struggling actress who finds one last attempt to live her dreams when she’s thrust into the glitter and spandex world of women’s wrestling via a weekly series about female wrestlers. Young will play Carmen Wade, a big girl with big dreams and zero experience in front of a camera. Noel is Cherry Bang, a professional stunt woman whose career peaked in the Blaxploitation heyday, now looking for a chance to do more than double.
Kohan and Tara Herrmann executive produce, with Flahive and Mensch serving as showrunners.
The Reagan-era female wrestling league G.L.O.W. (Gorgeous Ladies Of Wrestling), a female answer to the male-dominated World Wrestling Federation, was showcased in the eponymous kitschy, Las Vegas-based syndicated TV series, which ran for four seasons, featuring sketches, songs and wrestling.
