EXCLUSIVE: Warner Bros Television is closing a deal for the fall literary sensation novel The Nix, and the elements are dazzling. Meryl Streep is going to star and produce with JJ Abrams and his Bad Robot. Abrams will likely direct at least some of the episodes.

The bestselling first novel by Nathan Hill is a sprawling generational tale that focuses on a hippie-era mother who gets national press exposure for throwing rocks at a conservative governor on the presidential campaign trail. Before you know it, her estranged son — a professor, aspiring novelist and general underachiever — seizes an opportunity to get himself out of debt by writing a scathing profile of his estranged mother. CAA handled the auction for the book, which was just published by Knopf.

Hill's critically acclaimed debut novel follows a man named Samuel Andresen-Anderson, whose mother, Faye, reappears decades after she abandoned the family. She becomes the center of controversy for allegedly committing an absurd crime, and Samuel must dig back into her secretive past to try to save her. The novel is described as a sprawling satire that spans from the suburban Midwest to New York City to the 1968 riots that rocked Chicago and beyond.

Abrams' Bad Robot banner produces several TV series, including Showtime's Roadies, and the Hulu limited series 11.22.63. The Star Wars: The Force Awakens director is also executive producing HBO’s upcoming series Westworld. Abrams is repped by CAA and Robert S. Getman.

Streep has focused her career on film, most recently starring in Suffragette and Florence Foster Jenkins. She'll appear in Disney's upcoming live-action sequel Mary Poppins Returns. Her TV credits include Web Therapy and the miniseries Angels in America. She's repped by CAA and Gendler & Kelly.
