The Looming Tower - Hulu Nears Series Order for 9/11 Drama

EXCLUSIVE: After revisiting John F. Kennedy’s assassination in the miniseries 11.22.63, Hulu is examining another tragic event in recent U.S. history. I’ve learned that the streaming network is finalizing a deal for a 10-episode straight-to-series order to The Looming Tower, a drama series based on Lawrence Wright’s Pulitzer Prize-winning non-fiction book which chronicles the events that led to the September 11 terrorist attacks. The project hails from Oscar-nominated writer Dan Futterman (Foxcatcher, Capote), Oscar- and Emmy-winning documentary filmmaker Alex Gibney (Going Clear: Scientology and The Prison of Belief, Taxi to the Dark Side) and Legendary Television. The deal, which had been in the works for awhile, comes on the heels of the 15th anniversary of 9/11, the deadliest terrorist attack on American soil.

The Looming Tower traces the rising threat of Osama Bin Laden and Al-Qaeda, and takes a controversial look at how the rivalry between the CIA and FBI may have inadvertently set the stage for the tragedy of 9/11 and the war in Iraq.

Futterman, Gibney and Wright will executive produce the series, eyed for a 2017 premiere.

The Looming Tower would mark the fifth series order for Legendary TV, which also has Colony on USA, Love and Lost In Space on Netflix and Downward Dog on ABC.
