-Ratings Analysis:
On your mark, get so, go…it is the start of the new television season. Each of the Big 3 networks had something positive to say on this opening night Monday.
NBC topped the evening care it its combination of the season-premiere of “The Voice” (#1 overall: 8.0/12 in the household overnights from 8-10 p.m.) and the two-episode premiere/preview of sitcom “The Good Place” (10 p.m.: #1, 6.0/10; 10:30 p.m.: #2, 4.7/ 8). Comparably, “The Voice” was on par from the year-ago season opener, which translated into 12.37 million viewers and a 3.5 rating/11 share in adults 18-49, based on the Live + Same Day data. And “The Voice” bested competing “Dancing With the Stars” on ABC (7.6/12 from 8-10 p.m.) by five percent in households.
One year earlier, “Dancing With the Stars” scored an almost identical 7.9/12 in the household overnights, which resulted in 11.46 million viewers and a 1.8/ 6 in adults 18-49. In other words, both “The Voice” and “Dancing With the Stars” should have no trouble maintaining year-ago levels this season.
With solid lead-in support, NBC sitcom “The Good Place” was certainly sampled. But overnight slippage for the 10 p.m. premiere was 27 percent below the 9:30 p.m. portion of “The Voice” (8.2/13). And erosion for the 10:30 p.m. episode was 22 percent (6.0/10 to 4.7/ 8). “The Good Place” debuts in its regularly scheduled Thursday 8:30 p.m. time period out of the season-premiere of “Superstore” this week.
Also on ABC last night was the season-finale of “The Match Game” at a third-place 3.2/ 6 in the overnights at 10 p.m.
Top-rated for the evening, of course, was the 10th season-premiere of CBS sitcom “The Big Bang Theory” with a 10.6/17 at 8 p.m. Comparably, this was nine percent below the 11.6/18 for the year-ago season-opener, which translated into 18.20 million viewers and a 4.7/ 7 in adults 18-49, based on the Live + Same Day data.
Leading out of “The Big Bang Theory” was the series-premiere of Kevin James sitcom “Kevin Can Wait” at a third-place 7.1/11 at 8:30 p.m., which was right on par with the series-premiere of “Life in Pieces” one year earlier (7.2/11 on 9/21/15). That 7.2 in the overnights for “Life in Pieces” translated into 11.28 million viewers and a 2.6/ 8 in adults 18-49. Comparably, overnight retention for “Kevin Can Wait” out of “The Big Bang Theory” was an expected 67 percent.
Next on CBS was the conclusion of two-part “The Case Of: JonBenet Ramsey” at a comfortable 5.6/ 9 in the household overnights from 9-11 p.m.
Over at Fox, season three of “Gotham” opened at a sluggish 2.8/ 4 in the overnights from 8-9 p.m., which was 12 percent below the 3.2/ 5 for the year-ago season-premiere. That 3.2 in the overnights translated into 4.57 million viewers and a 1.6/ 5 in adults 18-49 (based on the Live + Same Day data).
The season two premiere of lead-out “Lucifer” perked up by one-tenth of a household rating point with a 2.9/ 5 from 9-10 p.m. Comparably, and of positive note, that was 26 percent above the series-premiere of failed year-ago time period occupant “Minority Report.”
The CW, which is basically sitting out this week, populated the evening with two repeat episodes of “Supergirl” at an average 0.7/ 1 on the household overnights from 8-10 p.m.

About the Daily Ratings - Please Read if you are new to Ratings
Each day (except Sunday) during the main TV Season we post the TV Ratings for the previous nights primetime shows for the major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC). Cable Network ratings will be added to the Ratings Database.
The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).
Next, if available, we will post the Top 25 Market 18-49 Ratings to give you a rough idea of the ratings to following.
Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above (We also where possible now post the 18-34 and 25-54 Demo Numbers).
Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below). Friday's Final Adjusted Ratings are normally available on the following Monday.
