After Relativity Media's bankruptcy threw their release schedule into turmoil, the fate of D.J. Caruso's The Disappointments Room remained uncertain for several months. Shooting on the haunted house thriller began in 2014, and we expected it to hit theaters sometime last year, but 2015 came and went with no sign of the film.
Fans of the supernatural can rest easy, however, as The Disappointments Room is headed to theaters in September, and we have the first trailer to prove it! Kate Beckinsale stars as Dana, who moves her family into a gorgeous old house in a secluded area, only to discover a hidden room in the attic with something sinister lurking behind its locked door.
As a general rule, I tend to gravitate toward films that deal with hauntings, and at first glance The Disappointments Room seems like it'll be right up my alley. I appreciate the fact that the contents of the hidden room aren't revealed in this clip, as Hollywood marketing teams have a nasty habit of giving away some of the best moments in horror films - but this trailer hints strongly that Dana might be grappling with some mental illness, which I'm hoping turns out to be a bait-and-switch tactic, instead of an actual revelation.
Caruso's previous work on Disturbia is evidence that he understands precisely how to build tension and circumvent audience expectations, and with a script by Wentworth Miller - who penned Park Chan-Wook's creepy, unsettling thriller Stoker - all the ingredients are in place for The Disappointments Room to offer some of the best scares of the year.
We're marking our calendars for September 9, when the film hits theaters and VOD.
