MacGyver- Pilot - Advance Preview : You only need a Swiss Army Knife
18 Sept 2016
DC MacGyver ReviewsWhile hit show’s from the 70’s and 80’s reboots have not always met with success it does make me wonder when exec’s think reboots are a good idea if they are not trying to relive their youth.
The most successful so far seems to be Hawaii Five-O and it’s no surprise when the pilot of this reboot looked in trouble they turned to the man responsible Peter M. Lenkov to give it a revamp, add Fast and Furious 7, Saw, director James Wan and you can see they are certainly looking for a high octane drama.
Being a fan of the original I was a little surprised by the young casting of “Mac” MacGyver thinking perhaps a bit more maturity and experience would be more suitable to the role.
Lucas Till (known for the recent X-men movies) portrayal is more a young genius than the savvy military hero, even though he does have a background in bomb disposal. Angus 'Mac'MacGyver is part of a team that works for a clandestine government organization. George Eads plays Jack Dalton who is the firepower of the group, ex – C.I.A and watches ‘Mac’s back (Most will remember Mac has an aversion to guns and they carry on this tradition) Jack also seems to be a ladies’ man and tends to rub his sophisticated boss Patricia Thornton (Sandrine Holt) up the wrong way.He also has a sketchy history with a hacker/computer genius, Riley Davis (Tristian Mays) who is added to the group. In fact, Ead’s character Dalton captivated me more than the lead.
While I was a fan of the Richard Dean Anderson’s MacyGyver I am glad I gave this version a chance. At first glance, nothing really made it a standout show for me and I won’t be going out of my way to watch, with a few twists it has nothing you don’t see coming or haven’t seen before. Fans of the original won’t be disappointed as there are plenty of nods to the former.
Things to note
Use of Swiss Army knife and paper clip
Wears brown leather jacket
Vinny Jones playing a villain
Look out for scene with a missile prop over his shoulder
Armed with only his intellect and Swiss army knife to get out of some pretty sticky situations Angus ‘Mac’ MacGyver is set to arrive on our screens Sept. 23 at 8 p.m. ET on CBS.
Are you looking forward to this reboot?
