Lucifer is on a deliciously devilish roll this season and its incredible season premiere will be followed up by an equally remarkable episode full of devious acts of deception. With the season in full swing all the fun really gears up in this episode. The quirky banter is as rapid fire as ever and to make this already brilliant episode even better, every series regular is present and they provide as much charm as viewers have come to expect from them.
Lucifer’s mom, Charlotte, plays a massive part in this episode. Whoever cast Tricia Helfer in this part deserves a great big thank you from the entire fandom, because her chemistry with everyone she works opposite of is off the charts. Then again, Helfer's so talented that I’m fairly certain she could manifest chemistry with a wall if she had to, so it isn’t that big of a surprise that she works so well with this cast. She has a natural charisma that allows her to fit in with the cast as if she had been with the show since the very beginning. It was the perfect choice to add her as a series regular because this episode sets her up with a very intricate and intriguing story that will easily carry her throughout the season.
Also worth noting, as was revealed in the officially released episode description, Lucifer entrusts oversight of his mom to Maze who was revealed to have tortured her back in Hell, so expect a lot of fun to come out of their time together. The chemistry between Helfer and Lesley-Ann Brandt is everything fans could hope for and so much more. This episode only begins to tease the fun that is in store for these two and it will leave viewers smiling and begging for more.
Elsewhere, while Maze is on babysitting duties, Lucifer is busy projecting his mother issues onto Chloe who is dealing with an interesting parenting dilemma with Trixie. Oddly enough, I think it’s going to be Lucifer’s issues with his mom that will allow this season to incorporate Trixie even deeper into the show. Though unfortunately, Trixie is only in one very small scene, but at least she finally made an appearance. The writers know she is a fan favorite so I'm hoping they'll keep incorporating her as much as they can.
While this episode has a heavy focus on Lucifer and his mom, Dr. Linda still has a big part to play in it as she forces someone that she has come to call a friend to confront a very big issue stemming from last season. The fallout of this confrontation seems poised to have a profound impact on this character. So profound that this particular character may very well never be the same ever again. Interesting to note is that she doesn’t share a single scene with Lucifer which seems like a clear sign that the show has big plans to grow her role within the series.
Every character is challenged in unexpected ways throughout this episode. It is a very tightly crafted hour that was brilliantly written by Ildy Modrovich and beautifully directed by Louis Shaw Milito. Together with this top notch cast, they crafted a red hot episode of perfection. What aids the perfection of this episode is that it also has a very deep and real message to deliver that lends itself to some richly poignant scenes. If this is how the season is starting off, with these two perfect examples of what Lucifer is like when it’s at its very best, then I can’t even wrap my brain around what extraordinary things these upcoming episodes hold in store for viewers.
Do not miss this powerful episode when it airs next Monday, October 3rd at 9/8c on FOX.
Quotes to tide you over until Monday:
“Perhaps we shouldn’t have borrowed from Maze, her clothing is insufficient.”
“I’m traumatized for eternity now, so thank you very much for that!”
“Are we really still on the whole ‘my mother did it’ thing? I thought she was responsible for our last murder.”
“I confided in you, trusted you, and you betrayed that trust.”
“Loving mothers don’t abandon their sons!”
Bonus quote because I liked it so much:
“Doing what’s best for your child, it doesn’t always make them happy.”
