Legal drama continues to be a red-hot genre this broadcast buying season with another high-profile entry. Fox has given a put pilot commitment to a drama from Empire co-creator/executive producer Danny Strong and Jessica Sharzer (American Horror Story).

Written and executive produced by Strong and Sharzer, the untitled project centers on a team of civil rights lawyers who take on the most newsworthy cases of our time, balancing the high stress of their jobs with sex, drugs and assorted other vices. 20th Century Fox TV, where both Strong and Jessica Sharzer are under overall deals, is the studio.

Sharzer wrote the feature film Nerve, which opened in July and ABC’s upcoming TV musical reboot of Dirty Dancing. In TV, Sharzer spent four seasons as a writer/producer on the FX/20th TV drama series American Horror Story. Under her 20th TV overall deal, she is working as a co-executive producer on Lee Daniels’ new Fox series Star featuring Queen Latifah and Benjamin Bratt. In features, Sharzer recently adapted the book The Young Elites for Twentieth Century Fox and is adapting the upcoming novel A Simple Favor for Fox 2000. She is repped by CAA.

Strong, who co-created Empire with Daniels, serves as an executive producer and frequent director and writer on the hit Fox/20th TV drama series.
