Episode four of Suits 6th season might concatenate how the show has been developing until now and how it will move forward. The staging of elements; more superficial lighting, lack of shadows unless they're realistic, normal contrast and a wide but light color palette, as a majority of normal lenses and angles; makes its weight falls on the dialogues and performances. Functioning as a joint in the big plot of the season, to get Mike out of jail, while juggling with the firm business.
The multiple storylines that were happening until now, merge into this conflict and takes most of the screen time this episode had. The funny bits solely hanging on the shoulder of Louis (and sometimes Jessica) and his new love interest, the architect that could have remodeled the firm so he doesn't have to deal with the new tenants, fall short compared to the dramatic moments the rest of the characters are going through.
While Jessica tries to keep the firm work afloat, trying to reconcile with Stu, the head of the traders, and he even dares to ask her out, Harvey tries to convince Mike to take the deal Sean Cahill offered them, To rat out on Kevin and have his sentence commuted.
Rachel corners her professor to help the death row inmate she interviewed believing his innocence. At first she seems innocent and the professor tells her off but in a Jessica way she presents why she's worthy to be in the Innocence Project and so is the man she chose to defend.
In the meantime, after talking to Rachel, Mike asks Donna to tell Harvey he won't take the deal, Harvey's desperate and Donna talks him out of his first plan that is to involve Rachel by telling her, thus the other convoluted plan. He makes it look like Mike is drugged and in the infirmary, while in reality he drugged him to get out of prison, share a moment with Rachel and realize why the deal is worth it. Freedom. Sean Cahill loses his chill for a moment until Mike shows up, ready to go back to his cell and cellmate, who it seems he will betray, obviously taking the deal.
This plot resolution was a little bit over the top, and the fact that Harvey is doing this kind of trick to help Mike and feel a bit less guilty makes me feel uneasy about his character arc. It was one episode, but he's out of control, and if he doesn't regain it soon, and sees the bigger picture or calms down a little I really can't hope for things to get better. He's in a crisis, and in this kind of moments one tends to do what's at reach, but had he learn anything after everything that happened?
We have 6 episodes to go to the midseason finale and the good news of a renewal to see how the story will develop. From my perspective I need to know what did Kevin do to be in prison, because right now I'm not rooting for Mike. Him and Harvey are the main characters of the show, but they did commit a crime, to have empathy with what they're about to do I need to know more.
