After Angie Harmon’s turn in the director’s chair this week it was handed to Sasha Alexander. Sasha, like Angie, had done, seems to get the best from her fellow cast members and in turn gives a great performance herself. For me, despite wondering how certain aspects were going to be explained in the story it was a solid episode and a few tense moments with Maura’s life being threatened twice. It also shows the past never really can be forgotten or buried as it can come back at the strangest of times.
We start with someone getting chased in the woods, he falls knocking him unconscious.
At Jane’s place,Angela and Jane finally address the conversation Angela had with Jane when she went undercover. Maura arrives and she seems to be spending a lot of time at Hope’s clinic.
At the Park Maura is talking about the Clinic and Jane tells her about her Job offer, Maura is pleased for her and points out the pros and cons. Jane is hesitant about leaving her family but it’s a safer job. Which after recent events, it’s something she may consider.
Arriving at the crime scene there is a body shot in the back over a table, it’s not our running man from earlier. The victim is well dressed and still has all his valuables so not a robbery. Even Maura can’t argue the cause of death is from a gunshot wound and Jane notices the bushes near are disturbed indicating someone was lying in wait for him.
At BPD Nina seems a bit tense when Frankie arrives having little joy at the victim’s apartment. What he did find was a cell phone bill but no phone was found on the victim or in the apartment. He asks her to run a trace. While she is breaking down the background on the victim Frankie clearly senses something is wrong. Nina’s mother is in town and she is nervous for her to meet Frankie as in the past she has hated her previous boyfriends. While chatting a location comes through for the cell phone and it’s not far from Jane and Korsak’s location in the park.
Korsak and Jane go in search of the phone calling the number, they come across what appears to be another body. After some impressive descending of an incline in heeled boots by Jane, she checks his pulse yelling at Korsak to call an Ambulance as he is still alive. This one is our running man from earlier, he has the victim’s cell phone on him and in his wallet a picture that takes Janes interest.
Jane heads back to Maura telling her about the other victim, Maura says she will check it but Jane points out he is alive and on route to the hospital. She shows Maura the photo.
It's Maura and the second victim posed at the Chapel of love ..its Maura’s ex-husband . yes, Maura has a secret she has kept hidden. Now I was very skeptical how this one could have been left out but it does get explained later.
Back at BPD Maura tells them all about Edward and the fact the marriage was annulled the next day after they came to their senses. There a few comments from Frankie and Korsak, “It’s a police station, not the jerry springer show” says Jane jumping to her friend’s defence . Maura states she hasn’t seen him in years but read he recently took over his father’s company. Jane promises to keep Maura updated on his condition and sends Frankie to work up a background on Edward Dunn, Maura’s ex, they need to work out if he was a victim or was he involved in the murder.
Angela has a run in from the past of her own, Ron her ex-boyfriends’ daughter. If you can remember it was her comments about her father’s safety that caused Angela to break it off with Ron. Well, she feels terrible for what happened. Angela wishes her well and leaves.
Jane talks to Kent who performed the autopsy, as stated earlier victim died from a gunshot wound, gunshot residue was found on Edwards clothing and some of the victim’s blood but nothing to prove if he was the shooter. Maura is in her office and Kent tells Jane how quiet she has been.
Back upstairs they are trying to piece together links between Edward and the victim. Seems about a week ago they had a series of calls between them on their business phones. The victim runs a small accounting firm so it doesn’t make sense for Edwards big company to use them but our victim was a forensic accountant. Seems he had blown the whistle on a few big companies. Maybe he found something at Edwards. Nina comes in saying she has discovered Edward is married Jane says they need to talk to the wife… you guessed it its Maura!
Now you have got to admire Janes slightly blunt delivery to Maura the fact she is still hitched.
At Maura’s after she talks with her lawyer seems the papers were never filed as her lawyer at the time had a stroke. As you can tell she is far from happy. Jane sympathizes and they also have two bottles of wine so it will all be ok. Maura tells Jane Edward isn’t capable of murder, she believes he took the victim's cellphone to call the police getting blood and residue on him from the victim but there is no proof. Though she did find a small hole on Edwards clothes ...um didn’t Kent examine them. Janes agrees to send CSIU out there again to see if any evidence he was being shot at. Jane is also curious as to why Maura never told her, it’s so far in the past isn’t much of an explanation. They settle down in front of an open fire and Maura tells the story. They met in college (I am guessing this was after Garret Fairfield) they were young and had a passionate relationship for a few months. His mother didn’t think Maura was good enough (Fans will know Maura is an Isles, she was good enough for the Fairfield’s ...who were one of the most prestigious families in Boston but not this guy, I can’t wait to meet his mother, guess she won’t be happy to learn they are still married) so they rebelled going to Vegas for the weekend and got married as you do. Common sense prevailed as Maura was off to Med school and Edward’s Mum clearly wouldn’t have let him follow her. It doesn’t explain why after all these years he is still carrying their picture in his wallet.
I like her speech about choices and it’s a little reference to the choice Jane has to make regarding her job offer. It's also one of the best scenes between these two in a long time and has been missed by fans of the show.
Meanwhile, Nina preps Frankie for meeting her mother, Nina comes up with the idea that they should act like they are not dating ... yes, that will work!
Jane is at the hospital and talks to Edwards mother (yes she is a piece of work) and she makes a quip about Maura when Jane starts asking questions, not the best thing to do to her best friend. She is also with a guy who has interests in the company and seems to be a friend of the family. At this point, they are informed Edward is awake but the Mother , Tilley , won’t let Jane speak to him.
Maura’s hunch was right as Frankie tells Korsak they found buckshot in the tree’s indicating Edward was running away from someone who took a shot at him. Hopefully, the crime lab can get something off the buckshot. Seems both Edward and the victim were targeted.
At the hospital, Jane enters Edwards room to tell him he is no longer a suspect but he won’t say anything to Jane. Jane calls Maura for advice and asks if she will speak to him as clearly, his mother seems to be a controlling factor.
In the crime lab as well as discussing Ramen, Kent informs Korsak he has found some rust on the buckshot it also picked up a steel element trace which leads them to a specific gun maker ‘Bercotti’ which as a very old gun is rare it’s up to Korsak to find out how many are in Boston.
Maura looks in on Edward when his mother isn’t looking so he sends his mother out for some chicken soup for him. Maura sneaks in asking what happened, eventually, he tells her what has been going on. Seems he found some discrepancy in his father’s ledgers and that’s why he hired the forensic accountant. The accountant called him to meet but when he arrived he was dead so he grabbed his phone to call the police when someone shot at him from the bushes so he couldn’t see who it was. No documents were on the victim but he destroyed the hard drive of the ones he gave him and hid those at his apartment. Maura can go there as they are married without a warrant and he gives her his key.
Frankie rushes to the Dirty robber to prep his mother on Nina and his Plan regarding Nina’s mother. Of course, Angela knows it won’t work like we all do and they are soon found out and she takes Frankie to one side to speak to him.
Korsak has located who brought one of the rare guns a few months ago and shows it to Jane.
Meanwhile, Maura finds herself face to face with Edwards angry mother Tilley and a gun. at first, you think she is behind it but she wants the papers to protect her family and the business reputation.
Jane calls and Maura puts it on speaker so Tilley can hear seems her friend at the hospital is the owner of the gun. Tilley and Maura agree to look through the papers together.
Ron comes to the Dirty robber to talk to Angela, seem his daughter filled him in on what was said. He wants to still be with her. I am pleased Angela has found some happiness.
Jane calls Maura who is heading back to BPD she tells her they figured out her friend Noah was running a ponesie scam, Jane informs her they are on their way to arrest him when Maura looks over and sees him and he runs her off the road.
Maura is ok but as she gets out the car he shoots at her until she threatens to throw the papers. Jane is still on the phone and hears all this. Luckily Jane arrives behind him and saves Maura who seems to be having quite a day.
Nina is nervous but she doesn’t have to be as Frankie and her mother got along, in fact, she likes Frankie.
At Maura’s they are throwing her and Edward a divorce party they even have a cake something I suspect was missing from the actual wedding. Jane tells Maura she is taking the job to which Maura responds “ I know change is hard and it's scary to face the unknown, we have more to do in our lives” it ends with a cute best friend moment on the sofa again something we have been missing of late.
Things are definitely wrapping up in this episode and the mood and tone set wonderfully by Sasha in the director's chair. We get them doing what they do best and showing they are there for each other even though things are changing in their lives.
So what are your thoughts on this episode?
What are your thoughts regarding Jane taking the job?
