A&E Network has put in development an adaptation of the Dutch television series Holland’s Hoop, about a family in the illegal pot growing business. The project comes from Alexander Payne, Jim Taylor, Jim Burke, Miguel Arteta, Scripted World and Endemol Shine Studios.

Written by Taylor, the untitled drama centers on a burnt-out forensic psychiatrist who, on the day his estranged father dies, learns that his wife is cheating on him and his teenage son is a delinquent. In a desperate attempt to keep his family together, he drags them to his father’s rural farm for the funeral. He quickly discovers that the farm is at the center of a vast criminal enterprise and that his family’s salvation may depend on his ability to continue his father’s legacy. (Holland’s Hope is the name of one of the first cannabis varieties designed for tough outdoor conditions.)

Arteta is set to direct the project, a co-production between Endemol Shine Studios and A+E Studios.

Scripted World, which specializes in foreign formats, is behind two Dutch format adaptations that went to series, Red Widow, which was produced by Endemol, and Betrayal, both at ABC. Additionally, the company previously developed an US version of the Dutch series Sea of Fire at ABC.
