Brandon P. Bell, who played Troy Fairbanks in the 2014 indie feature Dear White People will reprise his role in Netflix’s upcoming comedy series based on Justin Simien’s acclaimed film, and Logan Browning (Powers, Hit The Floor) also has joined the cast. Simien is writing the series adaptation and will direct the first episode
Set among a diverse group of students of color as they navigate a predominantly white Ivy League college where racial tensions are often swept under the rug, Dear White People is a send up of “post-racial” America that also weaves a universal story about forging one’s own unique path.
Bell’s Fairbanks is the charming son of the dean of students, a political science major campaigning to become Winchester University’s first black student president. Troy strives for ideals rather than his own dreams, even as it becomes harder to keep his personal and private lives separate.
Browning will play Samantha White, a biracial film major at an Ivy League school whose radio show ‘Dear White People’ lands her a spot in a campus political movement. Several black student groups want her as their spokesperson, but Sam is still learning to speak for herself.
Yvette Lee Bowser (Black-ish), Stephanie Allain (Dear White People) and Julia Lebedev (Dear White People) serve as executive producers.
Dear White People will be produced by Lionsgate, whose sister company Roadside Attractions released the original film. The 10-episode, 30-minute series will go into production later this year for a 2017 premiere.
