The CW is developing Blowback, a thriller drama project executive produced by Star Trek: Beyond director Justin Lin. The project, written/executive produced by Killer Women creator Hannah Shakespeare and also executive produced by Michael Eisner and Tariq Jalil, was originally sold as a spec to the CW late last season, coming close to a pilot order. I hear Blowback is now getting a boost with an order for two additional scripts by Shakespeare and a bible. The scripts have been commissioned by Warner Bros. TV, the studio behind the project, described as Gone Girl meets Bourne. It could be a limited series.
In Blowback, during a romantic weekend in New York City, a young financial analyst’s life is flipped upside down when his wife goes missing, he discovers a dead body in his hotel room, and everything he took for truth turns out to be a lie.
Blowback was a script developed jointly by Intrigue (Game of Silence), Eisner’s Tornante (BoJack Horseman) and Jin’s Perfect Storm Entertainment (Scorpion). It was written by Shakespeare off a previous spec by Brian MacGregor.
Shakespeare and MacGregor are both credited as writers on Blowback. They executive produce with Tornante’s Eisner and Lauren Corrao, PSR’s Lin, and Intrigue’s Jalil and Lucas Carter. PSE’s Danielle Woodrow and Troy Craig Poon also are expected to produce.
Thriller is a new arena for the CW, which has been focused on genre and female-driven comedy/romance fare.
