23:55 - The Mist - Alyssa Sutherland Joins Spike's Stephen King TV Adaptation
Vikings stars Alyssa Sutherland is headed to Spike.
The actress has joined the cabler's TV adaptation of Stephen King's The Mist, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
The Mist tells the harrowing story about a seemingly innocuous mist that seeps into a small town and creates immense havoc. Sutherland will portray Eve Cunningham, a wife and mother who fights to protect her teenage daughter from unknown dangers lurking both inside and outside the mist while facing down her past.
She joins Frances Conroy (American Horror Story, Six Feet Under), who will topline the project. Its unclear what Sutherland's The Mist role means for the future of her Vikings character, Queen Aslaug. The historical drama wrapped the first half of its expanded fourth season in April. Production begins on The Mist's 10-episode first season this summer for a 2017 debut.

20:50 - Catastrophe - Renewed for a 3rd and 4th Season
Channel 4 has today confirmed that the multi award-winning comedy Catastrophe has been green-lit for a third and fourth series.
Written by and starring Sharon Horgan and Rob Delaney, the series has garnered universal critical acclaim and a raft of awards since launching in 2015.
Viewing of the second series of Catastrophe was + 20% on series one and averaged 1.4m/7.0% over the six episodes making it Channel 4’s second highest performing comedy of the year.
The third, six-part series (6 x 30’) will go into production in November for a premiere on Channel 4 in 2017.
Phil Clarke, Head of Comedy at Channel 4, said; "I am thrilled to commission a third and fourth series of the multi award-winning Catastrophe. It's a welcome return for the brave, razor edged, excruciatingly honest and painfully funny portrayal of a modern, long term relationship."
Sharon / Rob said “We are thrilled to be making a third series of Catastrophe. Rob and Sharon are a blast to spend time with. And we’re not talking about ourselves in the third person, we’re talking about the characters. We're eager to breathe life back into Rob and Sharon. Okay, now we are talking about us. Catastrophe has already won: two 2016 Royal Television Society Awards (Scripted Comedy and Writer: Comedy) two 2016 Broadcasting Press Guild Awards (Best Comedy and Best Writer), a 2016 BAFTA TV Craft (Writer: Comedy), a 2016 Rose D’Or Award (Best Sitcom), a 2016 Golden Nymphs Award (best actress in comedy); a 2016 South Bank Sky Arts Award (Comedy); and a 2016 Women in Film and TV Awards (Writing).
An Avalon Television production, with co-producers Birdbath Productions and Merman, Catastrophe was commissioned by Phil Clarke and Nerys Evans for Channel 4. The series is directed by Ben Taylor (Cardinal Burns and Cuckoo) and produced by Jack Bayles (The Mimic, VIP), and the Executive Producers are Richard Allen-Turner (Man Down), Kara Baker, Rob Delaney, Sharon Horgan and Jon Thoday (Last Week Tonight With John Oliver).

Chad Coleman is a man who doesn’t want to be type cast. He’s not afraid to play the reformed gangster who opens up a boxing gym, the brother resisting change during the apocalypse, or the suave man ready to take on the vigilantes of Star City.
According to Chad he’s a bonafide badass.
“I was reading the script on the plane (before arriving at Walker Stalker Con.) He is Suge Knight, Jay-Z, and Dr. Dre all rolled into one. I’m telling you this is an amazing character. I’m gonna have so much fun with this guy.”
Tobias will also be very charming. After the destruction caused in season four and the hole left by the death of Damien Darhk, the criminal element of Star City will be a little scattered. That’s where Tobias comes in. He’ll seduce them with “brass knuckles and silver coins” to join his cause against the vigilantes of the city. After all, what’s a bad guy with no charm.
When asked, on a scale from 1 to 10, how much trouble Tobias is going to cause our heroes, Chad was quick to say 15.
“I’m dead serious. I’m telling you. I am not trying to hype it. I’m reading the script and I’m like wowwww. I can’t wait to get going on this one. He’s so smart and so quick with the words. He’s got savvy, sarcasm, smarter than everyone. He’s a strong man. It’s amazing.”

Can you tell us, if you will be back in season 2? Which development or storyline you would like to see or to play in the next season?
Of course I'll be back and now we can expect to get into the real storyline of the second book. Obviously there will be some changes, Simon wasn't a vampire yet when they all visited the Seelie Court in book 2. I think we'll see more of the Seelie Court and perhaps meet the Seelie Queen, and I'm hoping to see more Meliorn/Shadowhunter interaction, alliances and missions. Again I don't know what to expect, only basing this off the books. But the writers are good at following the books.

Deadwood alum W. Earl Brown and Michael Lindall have been cast opposite Matthew Goode in WGN America’s alien-saga pilot Roadside Picnic, based on the famous novel by top Soviet/Russian science fiction writers Arkady and Boris Strugatsky.
Written by Transcendence scribe Jack Paglen, with Terminator: Genisys and Game of Thrones helmer Alan Taylor attached to direct and Neal Moritz producing, Roadside Picnic explores a near-future world where aliens have come and gone, leaving humankind to explore the wondrous and dangerous mysteries left behind. The story also explores the social ramifications of their visit, as seen through the eyes of Red (Goode), a veteran “Stalker” who has made it his mission to illegally venture into the once-inhabited zone and scavenge the abandoned remains of the alien culture.
Brown will play Buzzard, a veteran and affluent Stalker who considers himself the de facto leader of his criminal cohorts. Lindall is Tender, a brave and daring Army vet recruited to join Red’s excursion into the zone.

Need to catch up on Season 1 of Supergirl? The CW said today it will broadcast the entire first season of the superhero drama series beginning Monday August 1, with two episodes each week until the new season of Supergirl premieres on October 10.
Melissa Benoist stars as DC Comics character Kara Zor-El, Superman’s (Kal-El) cousin who, after 12 years of keeping her powers a secret on Earth, decides to finally embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be. As previously announced, Tyler Hoechlin joins Season 2 as Superman/Clark Kent and Lynda Carter as the U.S. President.

08:55 - True Blood - Broadway Musical in Development
A Broadway musical based on the hit HBO vampire series True Blood is in development, The New York Post reports.
The theatrical adaptation is being workshopped under director Pam MacKinnon, who won a Tony Award in 2013 for directing the revival of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Author Elizabeth Scott — best known for her 2008 young adult novel, Living Dead Girl — is writing the book and lyrics, while Nathan Barr, who scored True Blood the TV show, is handling the music. The Post also reported that True Blood creator Alan Ball is overseeing the project, though Ball has not confirmed a role in the musical.
The workshop cast featured a handful of Broadway regulars including Ellen Foley (also known for her turn on Night Court), Ann Harada (Avenue Q) and Claybourne Elder (Broadway's Bonnie & Clyde).
Word of the workshop comes two years after Barr announced his plans to adapt True Blood into a musical, having pitched the idea to HBO and Ball along with musical samples partly crafted with star Stephen Moyer. At the time, Barr said he wanted the musical version to "return to the roots of the show."
Like the TV series, which wrapped its seven-season run in 2014, the True Blood musical would be set in the fictional town of Bon Temps, Louisiana where vampires — and other supernatural creatures — live among humans. The HBO series, especially in its earlier seasons, was often lauded for its over-the-top, campy melodrama — a style that would translate well to the stage.

Recently, following his success directing The Flash season 2’s The Runaway Dinosaur episode, Smith expressed an interest heading over to Arrow to bring his comic book creation Onomatopoeia into the live-action realm on The CW.
Even more recently than that, I was lucky enough to spend 20 minutes chatting to Smith about his barmy new movie Yoga Hosers. I slipped in a couple of questions about Arrow, and the likelihood that the showrunners will take him up on the idea of an Onomatopoeia adaptation.
“Oh my god, I would love that so much”, Smith enthused. “I’ve not heard from anybody over there, even though I’ve talked about it in the press quite a bit and stuff.”
He added: “I know I’m going back to The Flash, first week of September, to direct episode 7 of season 3. Still haven’t heard anything back from Arrow. You know, I wish, it would be amazing because I would love to write and direct Onomatopoeia in the show. Um, but I know they’re doing – what is it? – Wild Dog this year, as well as Vigilante, so maybe they’re just like ‘we don’t need you’, or whatever. But, at the moment, anyone over there raises a flag; I’m like ‘please, let me in!’ That’d be fun as fuck.”

STEVEN ZAILLIAN TALKS ABOUT THE EIGHT-PART HBO LIMITED SERIES* THE NIGHT OF*, DEBUTING JULY 10
An eight-part limited series created by Steven Zaillian (“Schindler’s List,” “American Gangster”) and Richard Price (“The Color of Money,” HBO’s “The Wire”), THE NIGHT OF delves into the intricacies of a complex New York City murder case with cultural and political overtones. The story examines the police investigation, the legal proceedings, the criminal justice system and Rikers Island, where the accused await trial.
Debuting SUNDAY, JULY 10 (9:00-10:30 p.m. ET/PT), the HBO presentation stars John Turturro (“O Brother, Where Art Thou?”) and Riz Ahmed (“Nightcrawler”), and was directed by Zaillian (7 episodes) and James Marsh (1 episode) from teleplays by Price and Zaillian, who are also executive producers.
Q: You have extensive experience in feature films, but this is your first TV project. Why did you choose this format?
STEVEN ZAILLIAN: Historically, the kinds of stories I’m interested in have been made as films. Now, it’s TV. But since I’d had no experience in TV, I could only approach it as a film. A long film. Which is what Richard Price and I did with the writing.
I didn’t begin shooting the episodes that follow the pilot until the whole thing was written. In films, obviously, you don’t shoot part of it, then write the next part and then shoot that. But in TV, that’s often done. It requires teams of writers, multiple crews and editors – and a lot of nerve, if you ask me.
Financially it makes sense; it’s cheaper to do it like that, since time is money. But I can’t work like that, running ahead of a speeding train. HBO allowed me to make this like a film is made, to cast who I wanted to cast – many are feature actors – and to hire primarily feature film department heads.
With a nine-hour film, there’s a lot to keep in your head. I thought of nothing else every day for about four years.
Q: How did Richard Price come to be involved in the project? What was the process for the two of you in collaborating on the storylines?
SZ: Originally Richard was only going to write the pilot and I was only going to direct the pilot. But in time, both us began to feel increasingly connected to it and what it could be, and less willing to entrust it to others, and wound up doing it ourselves.
Richard wrote the first drafts, I wrote the subsequent drafts, and we both worked on the storylines.
Q: James Gandolfini was originally cast as the attorney. What convinced you to go ahead with the project following his passing? Did casting John Turturro in the role change your conception of the character?
SZ: James and John are both distinctive actors. They are also both great actors. Nothing was changed when the part went from James to John. The character was the character no matter who played it.
I’ve admired John Turturro’s work for more than 25 years, since “Do the Right Thing,” and thought about him for the role even before James was involved. The fact he wanted to do something in TV at the same time I did was lucky timing.
Q: Riz Ahmed’s believability in the role of Naz is essential to the story. He is not unknown, but was much less-known when shooting began. How did you learn about him?
SZ: The role of Naz wasn’t easy to cast, to understate it. It’s a very demanding and nuanced part. I looked for a long time before finding Riz.
At the time, all I’d heard about him was that he was in a not-yet-released
Mira Nair film called “The Reluctant Fundamentalist.” I went on YouTube to find something else he was in and saw a clip of a film he’d done called “Four Lions.” I thought he was very good in the scene, and so had him audition. That did it for me. I could see him as Naz.
Other than John, everyone auditioned. We’re talking about something like 220 speaking roles. I saw several actors for every part, no matter how small, because they are all important, even if it’s just one line. It took a lot of time, but I can say there’s no one in this that I wish I’d cast differently.
Q: Although THE NIGHT OF can be seen as basically a crime story, it’s probably impossible to avoid political overtones in today’s social climate. Do you see an underlying message in the story?
SZ: It’s a crime story, a police story, a legal story, a corrections story. You make a story about all that, tell it honestly, and it will naturally be a social story.
But none of that is going to be interesting if you don’t tell it with characters who are interesting. Every character in this has their own life and story and concerns and reasons for why they do what they do. No one is written to get you to empathize with them, or to represent something, or to be a hero or a villain. They are simply meant to be real.
In my experience, no one ever really says what they mean, so my characters don’t either. What they do is react to and interact with the situations facing them in a natural, unsentimental way, and in doing that, reveal themselves, and hopefully some kind of understanding comes of it.
Q: Looking back at the evolution of THE NIGHT OF, what was the most satisfying thing about it?
SZ: I’m proud of everyone who worked on it, who cared about the job they were doing and did that job well because they felt it could be good.

True Blood alumna Tara Buck has booked a recurring role on the fourth season of Showtime drama series Ray Donovan. Buck will play Maureen Dougherty, a no-nonsense patrol cop. India de Beaufort (Blood & Oil) is set for a recurring role on Darren Star’s TV Land series Younger. It stars Sutton Foster as Liza, a 40-year old woman who pretends to be 26 in order to get a job in the highly competitive world of publishing – and succeeds.
Beaufort will play Radha, an Indian woman who begins dating Charles (Peter Hermann). De Beaufort is the former female lead of Comedy Central’s Kröd Mändoon and the Flaming Sword of Fire, in which she starred opposite Sean Maguire and Kevin Hart.
