Silicon Valley 3.08 "Bachman's Earning's Over-Ride"
Directed by Jamie Babbit & Written by Carrie Kemper

It looks as though finally that things are looking up for Pied Piper, which has hit the ground running following their company's launch, which is a runaway success, something that pleases pretty much everyone, bringing not only 100,000 downloads over the course of 10 days but also gaining relevant media coverage that exposes Pied Piper to an even wider audience. But whilst Richard and his team may be taking in all the attention there are problems on the horizon for both Erlich and Gavin, that they both need to deal with as soon as possible.

After Richard finds out that Erlich no longer has any shares in Pied Piper he threatens Erlich with the possible release of a press statement that would minimize the negative effect on the company. He intends to state that any ties with Erlich and Pied Piper will be severed as well as the link with him and the rest of the team. This will wreck Erlich's reputation within the Valley, and possibly ruin his career prospects for good. And Erlich isn't the only one who's in trouble.

Gavin has run into problems of his own for failing to make EndFrame a success, which proves to be the final straw for the board. And to make matters worse the board tell him that not only that they are firing him, they also to add insult to injury plan to add the Pied Piper app to the Hooli Store, much to the delight of the Pied Piper team. This also led to Gavin meeting Jack Barker, and this led to a possible meeting of the two of Richard's opponents who could now combine to link up as a possible bigger threat against Pied Piper in the remaining two episodes of the season.

We also had a cool side story this week involving the new Jacket that Jared brought. His display of the jacket led to some humiliation in a similar manner to that of Dinesh's gold chain, and provided an interesting distraction from the main, Erlich-focused storyline.

It turns out that Laurie ends up letting Richard know of Erlich's dire situation and that his selling of the shares was to cover his debt, and now he's essentially broke due. This leads to Richard offering Erlich a new position of head of PR at Pied Piper, saving his skin. It was a nice way to tackle the problem and led to an surprisingly more emotional episode of Silicon Valley than what we've had in the past. The various subplots worked well together along with the main storyline even if they did probably end up surpassing it, but it was good to see this episode play out in a way that Richard didn't end up creating further problems by not supporting Erlich, but instead deciding to promote him in a role that he should excel at, especially given the fact that he seemed to be pretty much taking over from Richard in the media interviews.

The unexpected emotional fallout of Bachman's Earning's Over-Ride worked in favour of Silicon Valley and even though it may not have been perfect it was still a pretty strong half hour of entertainment that worked, ending the eighth episode on a high point that sets the stage for the final two episodes of the season. It'll be interesting to see what remains in both this show and Veep, because both series have so far been on excellent and I can't wait to see how they wrap up their finales.

What did you think of Bachman's Earning's Over-Ride? Be sure to let me know in the comments section below and remember to check out the next episode of Silicon Valley tonight at 10pm on HBO after what should be an amazing hour of Game of Thrones.

Overall Episode Verdict:: A-
Positives:
+Erlich kept on in Pied Piper.
+Jared's jacket.
+Gavin and Jack Barker.
