BrainDead - 1.02 "Playing Politics:" - Advanced Preview

Tax Prom? Atheist Annie & A Gay Abraham Lincoln? Politicians Playing Musical Chairs? Exploding Heads and Vegetable Cravings? Running into Old Friends? Yes. These are all the highlights of BrainDead's second episode.

This week's episode marches onto the fourth day of The Government Shutdown. Mary Elizabeth Weinstead's Laurel continues to shine, while just about every other character, almost dismally, shows a more cynical side, as Luke struggles to keep Majority Whip after Republican's have stolen a Democrat to their side of the Isle.

Although my version of the episode was not the final product, which could change my view upon rewatching the episode when it airs, it seems to have left most of it's first episode's funny bone at the door, as this episode takes a more dramatic, and at times, contentious tone.

Despite this, it allows for viewers to really want to disconnect from the disdain of politics, or politicians, but connect with the goodness that Laurel seemingly possess, which is featured in at least two charming scenes.

The episode also introduces two more series regulars Gustov Triplett (Johnny Ray Gill), an eccentric genius, and Rochelle Daudier (Nikki M. James), the daughter (and also a doctor) of Dr. Daudier, whose head exploded in the ambulance in last week's episode, but don't expect too much movement in getting to know them. They are very introductory in the episode. But for those who might have been wanting more from Tony Shalhoub's Red Wheatus, you get to see quite a bit more of the new radicalized version of the Southern Republican Senator, but he still has yet to be the center.

In terms of mythology, we learn what happened to Dr. Daudier was not an isolated indecent and it begins to raise questions as to why do the space ants have different effects on different people, but that's not say that there are no new victims also introduced that become radicalized. --And, vegetables are a MUST for those without meaty brain tissue!! Be on the look out for plates stacked with garden delights or veggie drinks!!

I'll be curious to see if the final version turns out better than the version I saw. Some of the music choices and transitions between scenes, along with a change in tone, made the episode a bit too jarring for my tastes, especially after what I felt was a very good Pilot.
