12 Monkeys has been renewed for a 10-episode third season, EW has learned exclusively.

Based on the 1995 film of the same name, the Syfy series follows weary time traveler James Cole (Aaron Stanford) and virologist Cassandra Railly (Amanda Schull) as they attempt to save the world from the Army of the 12 Monkeys, who release a plague that kills off most of humanity. In its second season, the show moved past the plague storyline, delving deeper into the true motivations of the Army — to destroy time by killing off Primaries under orders from the Witness.

12 Monkeys is produced by Universal Cable Productions in association with Atlas Entertainment, which produced the original film. “This season of 12 Monkeys has proven to be a breakthrough,” says Jeff Wachtel, chief content officer of NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment and president of Universal Cable Productions. “From its epic storytelling to its grand aesthetic, Terry and the cast and crew have invested boundless energy and passion, and it showed. New legions of fans will discover what devoted viewers already know: It’s one of the best shows on television.”

The show, which also stars Barbara Sukowa, Emily Hampshire, Kirk Acevedo, and Todd Stashwick, hails from executive producers Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett. “Syfy and UCP have been incredible creative partners, and I’m thrilled that we are going to tell the next — even more twisty and emotional — chapter of this time travel adventure,” Matalas tells EW.

“In two short seasons, 12 Monkeys has become a cult favorite series,” adds Chris McCumber, president, entertainment networks. “Terry and the cast and crew have brought to life a rich world not confined by boundaries of time, with multi-dimensional characters whose motivations for saving the world are deeply personal and intensely relatable. It’s exactly the type of smart, on-the-edge-of-your-seat entertainment we want to bring to Syfy viewers.”
