If there ever was a mid-season finale, 'Two-Faced Jack' was that episode for Wynonna Earp. Our heroine's hunt for the dastardly seven came to a close with an episode that was its most harrowing yet.
We find out following last week's cliffhanger that Wynonna was taken captive by that all too suspicious, creepy doctor. The scenes involving him were quite macabre. In fact, this show as a whole has featured a lot more gore than expected, especially in this episode with Bethany being opened up. However, the gore is necessary to really punctuate the absolute pervertedness and malice of these revenants.
The twist that the doctor was just a regular, albeit psychotic, human lackey for the real big bad revenant was quite the surprise, even though there were hints last episode, ala the card in the corpse despite the doctor being by Wynonna's side. This revenant was not only creepy, but very menacing and fitting for the last of the seven. The heated nails that could cut through flesh was a nice little touch.
To see Earp vulnerable and in need of help was a great change of pace. Her isolated predicament allowed more screen time for Dolls and Doc as they worked together to find Earp. This was a first in that we got to spend some extended time with the two male leads and the chemistry between them is spot on. This growing love-hate relationship has quickly become one of the more engaging character dynamics in this show.
The highlight of this episode was definitely the fight club scene. Quoting rule number one from Fight Club and Doc's response, "if you don't tell anyone, how would they know" was delivered so hilariously by actor Tim Rozon. To add on to their back and forth quips, things got a little serious in their spar, which was very entertaining. Who Dolls is and these people he works for continues to be an intriguing mystery and to add that, there is the mystery concerning Wynonna's father who the seventh revenant revealed was a pal of Bobo. Things just keep getting more intriguing.
Before Wynonna shot the seventh revenant dead he told her how the worst is yet to come, and with Bobo and Constance Clootie out and about, his words were quite the understatement. This first season so far has had great pacing with each episode building on the last as Wynonna crossed off the names of those responsible for her father's death. Now, with 5 episodes left, it looks like things will begin to go full throttle as team Earp battles the two leaders of the revenants. This was a fabulous episode to end one storyline and bring another storyline to the forefront.
8/10
