'Bury With My Guns' felt like an in-between episode exploring the fallout from the first half of the season and the killing of the seven revenants, while setting up the next half now that Bobo has taken his first move. That's not to take away from much of the positives in this episode, including some characters working through their feelings and more romance than past episodes, including one scene that many fans have been itching to see.
As written in my 'Constant Cravings' review three weeks ago, it was quite shocking how brutally unforgiving Wynonna was when she killed the sixth revenant - the daughter of Mama who hated what she had become. It was great to see this not passed over and explored deeper in 'Bury Me With My Guns On.' Wynonna admitting she wanted to kill that man, thinking he was a revenant, and had a hunger to pull the trigger, was a great character moment. It was not needed, per se, any normal show would have moved on, but it helped to add a lot of depth to our titular hero.
Wynonna opening herself up led to the second love scene between her and Doc. In fact this episode was full of love. After quite a few Haught-less episodes, the cop was featured prominently this week and finally her and Waverly work through their feelings. The fact it took so long to get to this point, made their make-out scene very effective.
The reveal of Constance Clootie's son as a dumb, moaning and groaning monster was sort of a let down, especially considering how short-lived he was. It was kind of boggling how weak Clootie was to let Bobo take advantage of her and then to just hop in Doc's car without any resistance. What were they doing in their drive to the barn whereupon Doc finally tied the rope around her wrist? I guess it can be explained that Clootie resurrecting her child and then watching him die made her so emotional that she just became vulnerable, but still, her arc in this episode was nevertheless a let down.
Another odd plot device in this episode was how Doc and Wynonna buried Clootie with her head above the ground. Yes, it was in the middle of nowhere, but wouldn't they want to make absolutely sure no one finds her by burying her completely underground? There was too much at stake for both Wynonna and Doc to take a risk like that. It'll be interesting to see if she returns, and she most likely will, and whether her children will be explored more.
Overall, 'Bury with My Guns On' was a solid in-between episode. Characters got to work through their feelings, and the twist at the end with Bobo buying out the bar freshened things up and set up the last half of the season quite intriguingly.
