  • 21:35 - 24: Legacy - Kiefer Sutherland Could Return as Jack Bauer
24 is returning next season with 24: Legacy, a spinoff featuring all-new characters led by a new hero, played by Corey Hawkins. Original 24 star Kiefer Sutherland serves as an executive producer on the Fox series. He has no deal to act on the show as he toplines high-profile new ABC drama Designated Survivor. But there is a chance for him to guest star on 24: Legacy as Jack Bauer, according to executive producer Howard Gordon.

Sutherland “hasn’t ruled out” appearing on 24: Legacy, Gordon said today during his master class at the ATX TV Festival in Austin. He noted that “the character feels alive,” whether that be in a future movie or the spinoff.

I’d heard Gordon and the team of 24: Legacy have an arc in mind for the second part of 24: Legacy‘s 12-episode first season that could involve Bauer if a deal comes together, but there are no talks going on at the moment with Sutherland for acting. He could do a couple of episodes as a guest star without creating a conflict with his leading-man duties on Designated Survivor. There also is a possibility of other 24 original cast members reprising their roles in guest stints.

  • 21:35 - Battlestar Galactica - Movie Moving Forward with Lisa Joy Writing & Francis Lawrence Circling to Direct
Thanks to Jovan for the heads up.
EXCLUSIVE: The long-awaited big-screen transfer of the Glen Larson 1978 TV series is moving forward at Universal. Lisa Joy, who scripted and is exec producer on HBO’s series Westworld, is writing the script. Francis Lawrence is circling the movie to direct.

Bluegrass Films partners Scott Stuber and Dylan Clark are producing with Michael De Luca through his Michael De Luca Productions. Bluegrass is currently awaiting release on Free State Of Jones and Central Intelligence. De Luca is currently in production on Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed. The producers came on to the project in February.

Lawrence, who last directed The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2, is next directing Jennifer Lawrence in the spy thriller Red Sparrow and this would come after. The Battlestar Galactica series involves the battle between humans and the alien Cylon race, which is bent on wiping out the human race. It nearly achieves its aims with a devastating attack and the survivors flee in a caravan of spaceships. The cult favorite series led to a 2003 reimagined Battlestar Galactica miniseries aired on Syfy that Time magazine called one of the “100 best TV shows of all-time.” Numerous directors have taken cracks at the feature film version over the years. It gives Universal a strong chance to create another tentpole franchise.

  • 23:25 - Legion - Sold to Over 125 Countries
Marvel and Fox today announced FX’s new X-Men television series Legion will air day and date on Fox networks in over 125 countries. The show was picked up for an eight-episode first season last week, with a planned early 2017 premiere date. Based on Marvel Comics character David Haller, Legion is created by Noah Hawley (Fargo) and set in the universe of 20th Century Fox’s X-Men film franchise.

“Legion brings the X-Men universe to life, as a character driven, serialized TV show, in a truly amazing new way, and we’re pleased that X-Men fans will have the opportunity to see it simultaneously in the 125 countries where Fox is available,” said Fox Networks Group Chairman and CEO Peter Rice.
“FX is thrilled to collaborate with our international partners to bring Legion to audiences worldwide and the day-and-date delivery will make this a truly global event,” said Eric Schrier, President of Original Programming, FX Networks and FX Productions. “With the universal appeal of the X-Men franchise, fans will be amazed with the artistry and ambition that Noah Hawley and this extraordinary cast have brought to Legion.”

“We are thrilled to be partnering with FOX Networks Group to launch Legion to a massive global audience,” said Executive Producer and Marvel’s Head of Television, Jeph Loeb. “In our storytelling, it is imperative to us that we’re creating characters and a universe that resonates with people around the world and we are so proud to introduce this cast of characters to fans everywhere.”

Legion is “the story of a troubled young man who may be more than human. It introduces the story of David Haller, who since he was a teenager, has struggled with mental illness. Diagnosed as schizophrenic, David has been in and out of psychiatric hospitals for years. But after a strange encounter with a fellow patient, he’s confronted with the possibility that the voices he hears and the visions he sees might be real.” In the Marvel Comics universe, Haller is the son of Professor X. It remains unclear if that relationship will be acknowledged in Legion.

The cast of Legion includes Dan Stevens, Rachel Keller, Jean Smart, Aubrey Plaza, Jeremie Harris, Amber Midthunder, Katie Aselton, and Bill Irwin. Noah Hawley will serve as executive producer and showrunner. Lauren Shuler Donner, Bryan Singer, Simon Kinberg, Jeph Loeb, Jim Chory, and John Cameron will also serve as executive producers.

Production on Legion’s first season begins in Vancouver this summer.

  • 23:25 - The Deuce - Michael Rispoli, Natalie Paul and More Join HBO Drama Series
Michael Rispoli and Natalie Paul have been cast as series regulars on Deuce, HBO’s upcoming drama series starring James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal.

Written by The Wire creator David Simon and longtime collaborator George Pelecanos and directed by Michelle MacLaren, The Deuce follows the story of the legalization and subsequent rise of the porn industry in New York’s Times Square from the early 1970s through the mid-1980s, exploring the rough-and-tumble world that existed there until the rise of HIV, the violence of the cocaine epidemic, and the renewed real estate market ended the bawdy turbulence.

Rispoli plays Rudy Pipilo. A Gambino family capo running Midtown, Rudy represents the Mob’s financial interests in the sex business while indulging his personal interest in the women at its center. Paul plays Sandra Washington. Smart and hungry, Sandra is a driven newspaper reporter who probes the sex industry of Times Square from the street-level prostitutes and pimps to the moneyed investors and politicians who pull the strings.

Simon has recruited Paul for Deuce after giving the young actress her break with a starring role on his HBO miniseries Show Me a Hero. (She also did a 2-episode arc on the network’s Boardwalk Empire.)

Also co-starring in Deuce are Gary Carr, Margarita Levieva, Lawrence Gilliard Jr., Dominique Fishback and Emily Meade. Simon, Pelecanos, Price, MacLaren and Franco serve as executive producers along with longtime Simon collaborator Nina K. Noble. Marc Henry Johnson, who was instrumental in documenting the story, is a producer, along with Gyllenhaal.

  • 04:45 - Deadbeat - Cancelled by Hulu
Thanks to David for the heads up.
Hulu has opted not to renew original comedy series Deadbeat for a fourth season. Because of the nature of the streaming service, cancellation does not mean going into oblivion as it does on a traditional network. The produced three seasons of Deadbeat will remain available on Hulu for years to come.

The supernatural comedy starring Tyler Labine was a leftover from the previous Hulu regime and Hulu’s early days of an original programming player with lower-budget comedy series.

Deadbeat was a breakout hit when it debuted in April 2014. The show became possible when Lionsgate TV came on board after Hulu had been trying to get a studio to produce the script by Cody Heller and Brett Konner, from Plan B and Dakota Pictures.

  • 00:35 - MOVIES: Zootopia - Passes 1 Billion Worldwide at The Box Office
Zootopia may not quite fit the formula of a typical Disney animated classic, but it should go down as a success in just about every way. The film, a cartoon tale about a scrappy rabbit police officer in a city full of talking animals, has received overwhelmingly positive reviews, and has also been a big box office hit.

It opened with $73.7 million in its early-March domestic opening weekend, which was both the biggest-ever opening for a Disney Animation Studios film, and the best animated opening ever in the month of March. It remained in the top ten throughout March, April and May, and late last month became second highest-grossing film in history to be based on an original story, second only to 2009’s Avatar. It’s this year’s highest-grossest animated film and second overall (behind Captain America: Civil War.)

Now, Zootopia has hit another box office milestone: It has crossed $1 billion at the global box office. According to Deadline, it’s the 11th Disney film to cross the billion-dollar mark, and the second this year after, once again, Captain America: Civil War. Another Disney release, The Jungle Book, is about $100 million away from hitting $1 billion as well. Zootopia is, as of now, the 26th-highest-grossing movie of all time.

  • 22:00 - Good Witch - Renewed for a 3rd Season by Hallmark Channel
Thanks to David for the heads up.
Ahead of the Season 2 finale on June 19, Hallmark Channel has ordered a 12-episode third season of its original series Good Witch. Production on Season 3 is scheduled to begin in August in Toronto for a 2017 premiere, including a Halloween special to air in October.

Through the first seven episodes, Season 2 of Good Witch is averaging a solid 2.3 household rating and 2.5 million total viewers in Live+3.

Based on the network’s successful movie franchise, Good Witch is set in the fictional town of Middleton and centers on Cassie Nightingale (Catherine Bell) and her bright, teenage daughter Grace (Bailee Madison), who shares her mom’s special intuitive charm. Sam (James Denton), a doctor, and his teenage son (Rhys Matthew Bond) live next door and are charmed by the “magical” mother-daughter duo and wonder is it really magic, a lucky coincidence or just a special intuitive insight only this family possesses?

“Fans are enchanted by the magical adventures of Cassie, Sam and Grace – charming characters who have inspired our viewers to believe in the magic that can be found in our everyday lives. We’re excited to see the captivating adventure continue with a third season,” said Michelle Vicary, EVP Programming and Network Publicity at Crown Media Family Networks. “Our original series have performed outstandingly well on a very competitive night, and we will continue to bring quality entertainment to Sundays with the August debut of our newest series Chesapeake Shores.”
