The 100 - Red Sky at Morning - Review: "Win some, lose some"

As we get closer to The 100's third season finale, this week's episode laid out all the framework for that finale. As Clarke tried to convince Luna to take the flame, Raven worked on a way to stop ALIE once and for all while Murphy also attempted to stop ALIE.

Boat clan (Oil rig)
Following Luna's decision not to take the flame and become Commander, Clarke and Co decide what to do next. They are being shipped back to the mainland, but obviously Clarke can't just let this go. She again tries to convince Luna to take the flame and help them take on ALIE, but Luna again refuses. Clarke then decides to just inject the flame into Luna like she injected it into Emerson. She demands to see Luna and the two ladies chat a bit about Lexa and Titus before Clarke attempts to inject the flame into Luna. However, Luna sees it coming and puts Clarke on the ground. She said she left the conclave because she was sure she would win, and she doesn't want to kill anyone. The next day, Clarke, Bellamy and Octavia are taken to the container, but two of Luna's men have taken the key to the City of Light so they capture Luna. Jasper and his new female friend try to stop them, but the girl is taken down by an arrow. As Luna is tortured, she refuses to take the key and eventually takes out three of her own. Still, she refuses to take the flame and has Clarke and Co transported back to the mainland. Bellamy asks: "What now?"

I loved how Luna saw Clarke coming and put her down on the ground. I understand that Clarke really needs Luna to take that AI and fight ALIE, but it's still Luna's choice. Is Luna being selfish by not taking the flame? Maybe, but I can't say I disagree with her. Look at what the war with ALIE has cost our heroes. It's understandable that Luna doesn't want to be a part of that. Basically, it's like two countries are engaged in a war and the third country wants to stay neutral. I respect Luna's decision and it's actually refreshing to see a Grounder clan that is very un-Grounderish and doesn't kill. Of course, Luna learned the hard way that she can't run away from killing others, but she still refused to help. I do admire her persistence not to return to her old life. The final scene of the episode kind of reminded me of the ending of "Blood Must Have Blood Part 1", where Clarke faced a mountain of problems and said: "It can't be over." This episode ended in a similar kind of way.

Arkadia
Raven is looking into ALIE's code and has a way to access ALIE. However, Monty advises her not to do it and wait for Clarke instead. While Monty is pulled away by Harper to have some sex, Raven discovers that ALIE has a secret citadel that suggests ALIE is hiding something. Still, Monty doesn't want her to enter the code, but after he falls asleep, Raven does it anyway. ALIE of course knows someone is entering her code and asks Hannah to talk her son out of it. After some hesitation, Raven enters the code and Monty deletes his 'mother'. Raven learned that the citadel contains a kill switch to destroy ALIE, but before she can press it, ALIE pulls herself from Arkadia's mainframe.

Monty has now killed his mother twice. That is a very tough decision, but I'm very glad he decided to do that. It shows that he has grown a lot since the beginning of the season, when he sided with his mother without any doubt. These days seem far away and now everyone is focused on taking down the real threat that is ALIE. I loved how Raven said "Like always" when Monty told her to wait for Clarke. Raven instead decided to be her own badass self, and that was great. I kind of had to laugh about the random Monty and Harper hook-up. It has become a tradition now that the episode before the two-part finale has some sort of random hook-up. It happened in season 1 (Raven and Bellamy), in season 2 (Raven and Wick, and the Clarke and Lexa kiss) and now again in season 3. It's become sort of a thing, so before I watched this episode, I wondered if there was going to be another random hook-up and it turned out I was right.

Polis
When two guards enter the prison holding Murphy, Indra, Pike and others, ALIE tells them that someone is unchained. Indra quickly makes a move and kills the guards. While the other prisoners are trying to fight their way out of Polis, the trio team up to destroy Jaha's backpack. Of course, it takes about two seconds for ALIE to figure this out and she sends Emori to convince Murphy not to do anything. She tells Murphy that he will irradiate the entire city if he destroys the backpack. Pike separates the nuclear parts from the non-nuclear parts, but when Murphy again gets ready to destroy that, she tells him that the minds of everybody in the City of Light will be erased. That hesitation gives ALIE the time she needs, because when Pike destroys these parts, Emori tells Murphy that it's too late. ALIE's migration is complete: she is now connected to the Ark up in space.

That must be the team-up you never thought you would see: Murphy, Pike and Indra working together. It is highly unlikely that these three would work together, but now they unite to defeat the greater threat of ALIE. And it actually works rather well. It's not like the past is forgotten or forgiven, but for now, they must work together. It makes Pike a little more likeable as well, even though I can't forget what he did in the beginning of the season. I don't think full redemption is ever going to be possible for Pike, but if he ends up sacrificing himself in the finale, then I do think he at least served a purpose. I am wondering if what Emori said is really true. If the minds of everybody in the City of Light will be destroyed if ALIE is destroyed, we are in for an enormous body count in the finale. Kane, Abby, Jaha, Emori, Jackson, Ontari and many others will all be gone. Yet somehow, I would be up for it. It would basically be a whole new apocalypse and season 4 could focus on the small group of survivors that is still left. However, I do have one condition: save Kane. And Abby. And maybe Emori.

Overall, this was a great episode and one that sets the stage for what should be an awesome two-part season finale. While this season has had its ups and downs, I can't wait to see what Jason and Co have in store for the finale.

What did you think of "Red Sky at Morning"? Are you surprised that Luna was unwilling to take the flame? How brave was Monty to kill his mother again? What did you think of the unlikely team-up between Pike, Indra and Murphy? Can ALIE still be defeated even if she is up in space? And lastly, what are your hopes for the finale? Sound off with your opinions and theories in the comments below.

Next week the finale starts with "Perverse Instantiation – Part One". Watch a promo for the episode below.
