13th December 2016 - David Ayer and Margot Robbie Re-team for All-Female DC Villains Film

The filmmaker, who directed Warner Bros.’ all-bad guy comic book movie Suicide Squad, is reuniting with that film’s star, Margot Robbie, for Gotham City Sirens, a feature project that will showcase the top female villains from the DC stable, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Ayer will direct and produce the project with Robbie reprising her role as Harley Quinn, the part-time girlfriend of the Joker who is currently DC's most popular female character. Robbie is also executive producing.

Geneva Robertson-Dworet, a top female writer in the action sphere who has also penned scripts for the Tomb Raider remake and Warners' own Sherlock Holmes 3, is writing the screenplay.

The studio is still developing a Squad sequel as well as looking into a spin-off featuring Deadshot, the assassin character played by Will Smith. But this project was the most furthest along, and with Robbie’s Quinn having received near universal praise from Squad.

16th May 2016 - Harley Quinn Suicide Squad Spinoff in Development

We’re hearing the studio flipped over her take on the project, and she will produce and star in it reprising as Quinn. Other characters in the ether include members of the super heroine Birds Of Prey comics, first published in the early 2000s, on which the premise for this spinoff could be based. Warners is not commenting on the project. THR broke the news of it first.

EW has confirmed that DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. are considering a spin-off movie featuring Robbie’s baseball bat-wielding villain — to be produced by Robbie herself.

Plot and character details are being kept tightly under wraps, but the untitled spin-off wouldn’t focus on Quinn alone. Instead, Robbie would star alongside multiple female DC villains and heroes. Warner Bros. declined to comment.

According to a source, it was Robbie who actually launched the project. After working on David Ayer’s upcoming Suicide Squad movie, the actress became fascinated by DC Comics’ pantheon of female characters, recruiting a female writer to help develop the project for Warner Bros.
