Conviction - Ordered to Series by ABC + Teaser

ABC has started replenishing its roster for the 2016-17 broadcast season. The network has handed out a series order to Conviction, moments after cancelling star Hayley Atwell's Marvel drama Agent Carter.

Conviction, starring Atwell, emerged as ABC's drama frontrunner. With the network looking to make a shift in programming from its tried and true soaps (Grey's, Nashville) to procedurals, the series — co-starring entertainment president Channing Dungey's sister, Merrin Dungey — emerged as a shoo-in.

From ABC Studios, eOne and the Mark Gordon Co., Conviction tells the story of Carter Morrison (Atwell), the brilliant but ne'er-do-well daughter of a former president, who is blackmailed into taking a job as the head of Los Angeles' newly created Conviction Integrity Unit. She, along with her team of lawyers, investigators and forensic experts, work together to examine cases where there's credible suspicion that the wrong person may have been convicted of a crime. Eddie Cahill, Shawn Ashmore and Emily Kinney co-star.

Conviction's pickup gives Gordon, who exited ABC Studios for an overall pact at eOne, two series on ABC next season as it joins Kiefer Suthlerland starrer Designated Survivor. Liz Friedman (Jessica Jones) penned the script, with The Following's Liz Friedlander also exec producing and directing the pilot. Gordon's MGC topper Nicholas Pepper also exec produce.
