Chicago PD - In A Duffel Bag - Review
8 May 2016
Chicago PD MR ReviewsVoight is called to a crime scene where a baby is found in a duffel bag. These writers really know how to get you; it’s just never-ending emotional cases. But when Roman and Burgess show up at Chicago Med, they find Natalie working on the baby…who survived! So, who did it?
Here are the suspects:
Baby Doe has sickle cell anemia, and through A+ detective work by Ruzek, the team zeroes in on the possible father, Trey. After a DNA swab, it’s confirmed he’s the dad. But, he’s not a likely candidate as he didn’t know the baby existed. He had a one-night stand with Tana, the mother. You get the feeling it’s not Trey, and because he’s the first person the team talks to, it’s a safe bet he didn’t do it.
Through a contact of Olinsky’s, the team finds Tana Meyer and her family. Tana is out of the country, but Lindsay and Halstead talk to her parents, Ben and Deborah. Ben seems like a decent guy, but Deborah is a grade A wench. She even gives Lindsay the classic “Young lady”, yuck. It doesn’t take long for Deborah to lawyer up, so naturally, we’re suspicious. Ben is a bit more forthcoming with Halstead and Lindsay privately, revealing that with the help of a midwife, they gave the baby to a family.
Meet Mariella, the midwife. She’s an illegal immigrant, so she felt like she had no choice but to be part of the arrangement set up by the Meyers. Problem is, she looks more and more suspicious as the hour goes on. Apparently, they have enough to hold her. I had my suspicions about Mariella, but her pleads with Atwater seemed genuine and I can’t believe she did it.
Then there’s the Flynn family, the supposed recipients of the baby. When Voight, Antonio, and Ruzek visit the Flynn house, something seems off. Later, Ruzek finds that Tommy Flynn has a connection with the sports club who made the duffel bag. The boys (minus Olinsky) show up to the Flynn’s and find the place empty.
Of course the team catches up with the Flynn family and take them back to the district. Side note: Jay got to drive! Back at the district, Tommy tells Voight he was drunk and accidentally left the baby, outside after showing his son Max the lunar eclipse.
ASA Kot meets with the team and they settle on charging Tommy Flynn with aggravated battery and/or child abandonment, Mariella with abduction (she’ll also be deported), and Deborah Meyer with kidnapping.
Not so fast! While talking with Ruzek, Max innocently reveals he took the baby outside…his dad wasn’t even there. And now everything makes sense. Tommy Flynn wasn’t neglectful; he was protecting his son. This resulted in a heart-wrenching scene with Voight and Tommy, and a rare moment of Voight’s soft side. So does he still go to prison? That was never really resolved and I’m curious.
Ah, dreams really do come true. Lindsay gets her wish when she and Halstead arrest Deborah in very public place. Oh, sweet justice. And as the icing on the cake, Tana might get to keep her baby, who after a few scares, survived.
Elsewhere…
Justin is going to make an appearance soon! I always love when he’s there. At the top of the hour, Voight finds out Justin is in town. The fact that he didn’t know worries me a bit, might he be up to no good? I certainly hope not; he’s come so far. He also has a wife and baby, so hopefully he’s not getting into any trouble.
The case hit a personal note for Voight this week. In talking with Lindsay, we found out Justin was actually a twin, but the twin (a girl) was stillborn. In that moment, I realized what Erin must have meant to Camille, and what she does mean to Voight. We’ve always known she’s the daughter they never had, but it carries so much more meaning now, because she really is the daughter they never had a chance to know.
But nothing was sweeter this week than seeing Voight with his grandson. He is so darn cute! I’m just so worried that something bad will happen. It typically does when Justin and Olive show up.
I can’t help but look at Burgess and Roman differently now that they’ve kissed. I didn’t see much there before as far as romantic chemistry goes, but it’s there now and I still don’t know how I feel about it. I love these two as partners and friends, and anything more worries me. At the end of the hour, the two have drinks at Molly’s with Natalie who toasts, “Hold ‘em close, whoever’s near to you. Love them hard.” And then Roman and Burgess give each other the look. It’s Scrabble time.
I still have mixed feelings. One, because I don’t want their partnership/friendship ruined. Two, because this was totally used as a plot device for the next episode, the backdoor pilot for Chicago Justice. I’m excited, don’t get me wrong. I just hope it wasn’t done only to be revealed publicly in front of Ruzek.
What did you think of the episode? Was Roman and Burgess hooking up a good idea? Why is Justin really in town? Share your thoughts below!
