22:35 - MOVIES: Disney Puts a Slew of Dates on Hold for Jungle Book 2, Maleficent 2, Cruella & More
Without specifically identifying titles, Disney has made a number of release date changes, and booked some future dates for both its upcoming live action and fairy tale-live action fare. One of these dates per insiders will go to Jungle Book 2, the first installment of which is honing in on $600M worldwide.
Originally, the Mouse House had Dec. 22, 2017 booked for an untitled Disney live action fairy tale. They’ve moved off that slot a week after their Star Wars: Episode VIII release and moved up to July 28, 2017, going up against Sony’s Jumanji reboot.
In addition, Disney has RSVPed April 6, 2018 for another live action fairy tale, following two days after the Wednesday opening of an untitled Laika toon from Focus Features. That’s also the post-Easter holiday frame, and follows in the shadow of Warner Bros.’ Steven Spielberg’s title Ready Player One.
Also, Disney has booked Aug. 3, 2018 for a live action movie. Currently, there isn’t any competition.
And on Christmas 2018, Disney has also dated another live action pic. While 20th Century Fox hasn’t officially registered the date with ComScore yet, James Cameron announced at CinemaCon that’s when he plans to unveil the first of four Avatar sequels. Currently, Sony Animation has a feature toon version of Spider-Man set to open on Dec. 21, 2018. Finally, Disney has blocked off Dec. 20, 2019 for another live action untitled fairy tale. Currently, it’s the only title on that date.
After its animation, Lucasfilm, and Marvel properties, Disney’s live action reboots of its celebrated toon classics have become a huge component of its upcoming slate with most of them grossing on average $700M worldwide. With Jungle Book booming currently in theaters, Disney’s next live action classic to hit screens is Alice Through the Looking Glass on Memorial Day weekend.
Now there are several pics in the mix at the Burbank-based studio that could potentially fill these untitled dates, and that list is below. We’ll know in the coming weeks what slots where:
Cruella with Emma Stone set for the title role and Kelly Marcel writing
A Wrinkle in Time with Ava DuVernay attached to direct and Jennifer Lee writing
Jungle Cruise with Dwayne Johnson set to star and John Requa and Glenn Ficarra writing
Dumbo with director Tim Burton and writer Ehren Kruger
A sequel to Mary Poppins with director Rob Marshall, starring Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda
Maleficent 2 with Angelia Jolie set to return in the title role and Linda Woolverton writing
The Nutcracker and the Four Realms with director Lasse Hallstrom and writer Ashleigh Powell
The Jungle Book 2 with both director Jon Favreau and writer Justin Marks returning
A Tinker Bell project with Reese Witherspoon set to star and Victoria Strouse writing

22:25 - Manhunt - Comedy from David Caspe & Aaron Kaplan in Development at Showtime
In competitive situation, Manhunt, a half-hour series project from Happy Endings creator David Caspe, Horrible Bosses director Seth Gordon, Black List writer Jordan Cahan (My Best Friend’s Girl) and Life In Pieces executive producer Aaron Kaplan, has landed at Showtime for development. I hear the pitch, from Sony TV where Caspe and Gordon are under overall deals, has received a production commitment.
Written by Caspe and Cahan — who are lifelong friends, having grown up together in the Midwest — and to be directed by Gordon, Manhunt is an action comedy two-hander.
Caspe, who will serve as showrunner, executive produces with Cahan, Gordon and Kaplan. The project was based on an idea by Kaplan. He pitched it to Gordon who, in turn, reached out to Caspe and Cahan. Gordon, Caspe and Cahan worked together on the NBC comedy series Marry Me, which Caspe created and executive produced. Gordon directed the pilot and several other episodes, while Cahan was a supervising producer in his first TV writing gig.

22:20 - MOVIES: Goosebumps - Sony Developing Sequel
Sony wants to scare you again. The studio is preparing a follow-up to last fall’s Goosebumps, EW confirms.
Deals are in the works to bring back director Rob Letterman and writer Darren Lemke, along with producers Deborah Forte and Neal H. Moritz. While star Jack Black isn’t officially on board, the plan is for him to return as the author of the spooky book series, R.L. Stine.
The first cinematic adaption of Stine’s franchise book series raked in nearly $160 million worldwide with a budget of $58 million. It fared well with critics, too: EW gave the film a B, while it holds a 77 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

21:10 - Blindspot - Anagram Episode Titles Unlock a Message to Fans
Thanks to tsukikomew & A for the heads up.
As the NBC drama nears its first season finale on May 23, series creator Martin Gero is inviting viewers to get directly involved with a crucial part of the show — but you’ll have to keep an eye on the episode titles, which have been scrambled anagrams since the show’s debut.
“The first 10 episodes were just a fun thing we did,” Gero tells TVLine of the mixed-up monikers, “but from Episode 11 to Episode 23, that is actually a message to fans. As they figure it out, they can get involved in the Blindspot universe in a very first-person way.”
Using the episode titles from Feb. 29 through the May 23 season ender, fans can decode a message that, according to Gero, tells viewers who to contact in case of an emergency. And tonight’s installment (NBC, 10/9c) — the 19th of the season — will unlock a major piece of the puzzle.
“You’re definitely going to want to watch Episode 19, and you’re definitely going to want to watch through Episode 23,” Gero hints. “All of the information is in there for how you could potentially contact your handler. I really want them to figure it out on their own.”

21:45 - MOVIES: The Princess Diaries 3 - Director In Discussions With Disney Over Film
Last month, we were incredibly excited to hear that a Princess Diaries 3 could actually happen when the franchise's director Garry Marshall mentioned he'd chatted with Anne Hathaway about taking part in it.
Now, Marshall, 81, explains that he's gotten Disney in on the idea of a third film. In fact, he sat down with E! News' Erin Lim during a junket for his latest film, Mother's Day, and dished that the company and him are "in talks" about getting it going.
"Well, you know, Disney is quite powerful," he began, "and they say they would like to announce—not me—but we are talking."
He continued, "Anne Hathaway has a baby now...and a wonderful husband, Adam [Schulman]. And people change. There's a passage. It goes, 'Hello! Oh! I'm discovered in this movie!' If it's a comedy they say, 'Alright, enough of that, I want to be an O.D. on drugs; I want to be naked.' And they go through that period."
However, he says that almost every time the stars of his films end up wanting to work with him again. "Then they have a child and come back to me and say, 'I'd like to do something my child could see.' And I'm very good and making things your child could see and the whole family!"
Well, considering Anne gave birth to her baby boy a few weeks ago, we're guessing this turnaround might come in the near future, and we can't help but hope it's for a third Princess Diaries film.
