  • 22:30 - MOVIES: Peter Pan - Disney's New Live-Action Film to be Directed by Pete's Dragon Helmer
EXCLUSIVE: Disney will make its own live-action Peter Pan film, and has set David Lowery to direct a script that he will write with Toby Halbrooks. They teamed to write and Lowery directed Pete’s Dragon, a new version of Disney’s 1977 live action/animated musical. It will be the second effort in the family film space for Lowery, who was best known for writing and directing the edgy indie Ain’t Them Bodies Saints.

Disney might as well reclaim the J.M. Barrie work about the boy who would not grown up; it was the focus of its successful 1953 animated film. Many other studios have made their own versions on the big and small screen, including Steven Spielberg’s star-studded Hook to most recently the Joe Wright-directed Pan, which didn’t work out well for Warner Bros. Lowery is separately working towards directing Robert Redford in The Old Man And The Gun, which Lowery adapted from the David Grann Vanity Fair article about an aging thief who in the 1980s knocked off a lot of banks in throwback style and became a folk hero outlaw.

This becomes another strong project for Disney’s live-action division, run by Sean Bailey, which has generated its own list of family-themed blockbusters from past Disney properties and theme park attractions and some originals. It doesn’t get the ink accorded to sister silos Pixar, Marvel and Lucasfilm, but it has gotten results that should continue with the upcoming Jon Favreau-directed The Jungle Book, which is already slated to develop a sequel. The division has a Tim Burton-directed Dumbo percolating, and Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, which directors Joachin Ronning and Espen Sanberg have wrapped.

Also percolating is the James Bobin-directed sequel Alice Through The Looking Glass, a Mary Poppins sequel with Rob Marshall directing Emily Blunt and Hamilton‘s Lin Manuel Miranda, the Bill Condon-directed Beauty And The Beast with Emma Watson, Angelina Jolie in Maleficent 2, Emma Stone set for Cruella De Ville, Dwayne Johnson attached to Jungle Cruise, James Mangold developing Captain Nemo, Ehren Kruger developing Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride, with a version of Tower Of Terror based on a John August idea. There is also Tinkerbell, which has Reese Witherspoon attached. Latter film is on track to happen before Peter Pan, and it is possible that there could be some crossover cast.

  • 20:55 - Chance - Diane Farr to Recur

Based on Nunn’s novel, Chance is described as a provocative psychological thriller that focuses on Eldon Chance (Laurie), a San Francisco-based forensic neuropsychiatrist who reluctantly gets sucked into a violent and dangerous world of mistaken identity, police corruption and mental illness. Farr will play Christina, Chance’s (Laurie) ex-wife. • 20:50 - MOVIES: Ready Player One - Mark Rylance in Final Negotiations to Co-Star
Mark Rylance is in final negotiations to co-star in Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi film Ready Player One.

The Bridge of Spies Oscar winner is fast becoming the go-to actor for the filmmaker. After collaborating with Spielberg on the Cold War-era drama, Rylance landed the titular role in the director's upcoming film The B.F.G., which is expected to debut next month at Cannes. Earlier this week, the British actor signed on to play Pope Pius IX in The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara, which will mark Spielberg's follow-up to Ready Player One.

Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow are behind Ready Player One, an adaptation of Ernest Cline's best-selling novel. Rylance and Warners are still working out the dates, a prospect that has proved tricky given that the actor is on board to co-star in another movie for the studio, Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk. But Warners was able to find a way to have Rylance do both films (Dunkirk begins filming in France on May 23, and Ready Player One is heading toward a June start).

Tye Sheridan leads a cast that includes Olivia Cooke, Simon Pegg and Ben Mendelsohn in a story set in a virtual world called OASIS, in which a teenager (Sheridan) finds himself competing in a treasure hunt against ruthless foes after the game's founder dies and offers his fortune as the grand prize.

Rylance will play James Donovan Halliday, the creator of OASIS, an enigmatic figure with shades of Howard Hughes and Steve Jobs.

Amanda Brugel (Orphan Black) has been cast in a recurring role on USA Network’s 10-episode straight-to-series drama Eyewitness, an adaptation of the Norwegian crime thriller Øyevitne. From Shades of Blue creator Adi Hasak, Eyewitness explores a grisly crime from the point of view of the eyewitnesses. Catherine Hardwicke is set to direct the pilot.

Brugel will play Sita, a feisty biker chick with a newborn baby and impulse control issues. Brugel recurred on Orphan Black and had a supporting role in Oscar-nominated Room.

  • 22:05 - Degrassi: Next Class - Renewed for 2 More Seasons by Netflix
Thanks to Dillan for the heads up.

Degrassi: Next Class is going to make it to senior year. A day after Netflix picked up the teen drama for a second season, EW can announce exclusively that the streaming service has renewed the series for two additional seasons.

As the latest iteration of the long-running Degrassi franchise, the renewal means Degrassi: Next Class will have at least four seasons, and the franchise overall will be up to 18 seasons. Degrassi: Next Class is the franchise’s first foray into streaming.

“It is wonderful for our stories to be reaching our core teen audience where they live around the world — on Netflix,” Degrassi: Next Class showrunner Linda Schuyler told EW. “And now it’s even more wonderful to be ordered for yet another two seasons of drama, joy and angst!”

Both seasons 3 and 4 will include 10 episodes, which is the same amount as the show’s first and second seasons.

The second season of Degrassi: Next Class will premiere on July 22 on Netflix.

Sebastian Roche (The Originals, General Hospital) has been cast in a recurring role on the second season of Amazon’s original drama series The Man in the High Castle. Based on Philip K. Roche will play reichminister Martin Hausmann, a wealthy, high-ranking Nazi official based in Berlin. He is the biological but estranged father of Joe (Luke Kleintank) and is sincere in his desire to reconnect with his son but would not blink twice about the extermination of the enemies of the Reich. • 21:45 - MADtv - 8 New Episodes Ordered by The CW
THE CW NETWORK ORDERS NEW “MADtv” PRIMETIME SERIES

The Emmy Award–Winning Sketch Comedy Series Returns With 8 Brand-New Episodes Featuring New and Returning Cast Members

BURBANK, Calif. (April 11, 2016) – The Emmy Award-winning sketch comedy series MADtv is returning to television, making the jump to primetime with eight all-new one-hour episodes on The CW Network; a premiere date and time for the series, from Telepictures, will be announced at a later date.

Back with its signature pop-culture parodies and politically incorrect humor, the new MADtv will star up-and-coming new comedy voices and will feature special appearances from returning cast members of the original late-night series as hosts of each episode.

Classic episodes from the 14 seasons of the show’s original late-night run are currently available to stream on CW Seed, The CW’s digital network. The CW also recently celebrated the 20th anniversary of MADtv with a reunion special of highlights from the original series and new material featuring 19 returning series alumni.

MADtv is produced by Telepictures, with executive producers David E. Salzman, Mark Teitelbaum, and John Montgomery.

Executive producer/showrunner David E. Salzman said: “The MADtv franchise is as vibrant as ever thanks largely to social and digital media appealing to a fan base numbering in the millions that relates to the show’s brand of authentic and irreverent cross-cultural comedy. We will continue to present the hard-hitting, laugh-out-loud, wall-to-wall pop culture parody our fans expect, but in a fresh, new way.”

  • 22:00 - Young and Hungry Spinoff - Aimee Carrero to Co-Star
Thanks to Letti for the heads up.
Young & Hungry‘s Aimee Carrero is set to star opposite Ashley Tisdale in the Young & Hungry spinoff series, in development at Freeform. The network announced the project at its upfront yesterday.

Carrero will reprise her co-starring role from the original series, Sofia Rodriguez, an ambitious banking intern and best friend and roommate to Gabi (Emily Osment). I hear the proposed Young & Hungry spinoff will follow Sofia (Carrero) as she lands a job working for an overbearing boss. Tisdale is playing Logan Rawlings, the magazine editor/lesbian character she originated in two guest starring appearances on Young & Hungry, which she executive produces, along with the spinoff.

Young and Hungry just had its third season finale this week and returns with new episodes June 1.

  • 22:00 - MOVIES: Edge Of Tomorrow Sequel - Finds Writers
EXCLUSIVE: Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse have been tapped to write the sequel to Tom Cruise and Doug Liman’s sci-fi sleeper hit Edge Of Tomorrow. The original film, also starring a buffed-up Emily Blunt, was a surprise and pleasure for many genre fans with its time-bending narrative and stylish chemistry between its leads. Although a slow opener domestically, it eventually hit $100 million in the U.S. More importantly, it was a bone fide smash internationally, grossing a further $270 million or so to make the case for a sequel pretty compelling.

The original seemed to square up any loose ends pretty efficiently, though, so Shrapnel and Waterhouse will have to be inventive to find a way to get Blunt back in the mix with Cruise. Liman is attached to direct with Erwin Stoff and Tom Lassally producing. Christopher McQuarrie, who wrote the first film, is in talks to board as a producer and is developing the script with the writers.

Shrapnel and Whitehouse are much in-demand. After getting their first proper feature produced this year with the Jesse Owens biopic Race,  the pair were brought on to do a rewrite of The Gray Man, based on the novel by Mark Greaney, at Sony. McQuarrie is also set to direct this one with Charlize Theron attached to star. Theron’s Denver and Delilah label is also aboard as producers alongside Joe Roth.

  • 22:00 - MOVIES: Kingsman: The Golden Circle - Pedro Pascal Joins Cast + Poster
EXCLUSIVE: Pedro Pascal, who so flamboyantly played Oberyn Martell in Game of Thrones before meeting an infamously grisly end, has joined Matthew Vaughn’s Kingsman: The Golden Circle. Pascal’s character is believed to be called Jack Daniels. Vaughn’s second installment of the stylish spy caper, the original of which grossed over $415 million for Fox, is casting up ahead of starting production later this year.

In addition to lead Taron Egerton and the returning Edward Holcroft, Halle Berry and Julianne Moore are also believed to be in the mix. Vaughn and Jane Goldman wrote the script for the sequel to Kingsman: The Secret Service.
