This week on the Originals, Kol tried to leave town after the ancestors started to tear down his hiding place but was unable to do so and is now trapped with his hunger. Lucien kidnapped Klaus to lure Elijah to him. Cami and Hayley worked together to free Klaus and managed to knock out Aurora who took the serum but hasn’t activated it yet. After finding out Aurora was playing him, Lucien went to Cami’s and bit her.
Favorite character: I like vengeful Freya. I hope that her character gets a bit darker after losing Finn. We usually see her hang back at the mansion when there’s a fight but this week she was right in the middle of the action. Her plan was actually pretty impressive. She took her time with the spell to make sure she didn’t get it wrong, which is not something we usually see after a character loses someone. Usually they’re so bent on getting revenge that they don’t think things through. And her spell worked brilliantly, if only those ancestors didn’t keep getting in the way. Which brings me to…
Least favorite character: So the ancestors have a new puppet. Either Van is so angry at Davina that he doesn’t realize how stupid the ancestors’ plan is, or he knows nothing about vampires. Here’s the thing. I get that the ancestors want the Mikaelsons gone. But I say that Lucien manages to kill them all, then what? How are they planning to get rid of the new all-powerful monster that they’ve created. Do they not realize that they made something even worse that is even harder to kill than the Mikaelsons. Do they honestly believe that Lucien will leave town like a nice little soldier. They turned a psychopath into an unkillable monster. In what world does that sound like a good idea?
Things that made zero sense: If there’s one thing I absolutely hate in any form of serialized media, it’s continuity errors. The biggest one this week was when Cami started bleeding from her eyes because she was in a residence without having been invited in. What the hell was that? My first reaction was “that’s so not what happens”. I decided to check my hunch to see if I was correct. Earlier this season on ‘The Vampire Diaries’ both Caroline and Stefan were in a residence as it changed owners. Therefore they had not been invited in yet by the new owner. But they didn’t start to bleed from their eyes. They just got magically kicked out. So what should have happened this week was Cami getting magically catapulted out of Lucien’s apartment. So either this is a communication error between the two shows (which is a big error on both showrunner’s parts since these shows are in the same universe and therefore have the same mythology) or they just wanted to add a cool, dramatic effect and thought no one would notice. Wrong! Something else that bugged me but not as much as what I previously discussed was when Kol couldn’t leave New Orleans. It has been said time and time again that if a New Orleans witch left town they would not be able to use magic because the ancestral magic doesn’t reach that far. So how is it possible that Kol was effected by their magic when he crossed the border. I’m hoping this will somehow be explained. Perhaps it’s tied to his resurrection or something, but they should not be able to cause him harm once he’s crossed the border.
Questions: Now that my ranting is over (sorry about that), I have some questions pertaining to the serum. Is it like vampire blood which passes from your system after 24 hours? If that is the case then they would be able to safely kill her once it’s gone from her bloodstream. Also, when Klaus stopped Hayley from ripping her heart out, a question I’ve had for some time now popped into my head. When you cut off the head or rip out the heart of an Original. Don’t they die? All this talk about white Oak bullets … I’m pretty sure that if they swung a sword hard enough at Lucien’s head that he wouldn’t get back up again. We saw on ‘The Vampire Diaries’ that a vampire can heal an injury but not regrow a limp. Is that the same for Originals? This hasn’t really come up, except for way back in the day when Elijah tried to kill Klaus by ripping his heart out. It seemed to have been possible then so why has no one mentioned it since?
What’s next: I’m didn’t discuss Cami this week because judging from the promo I’ll have a lot more to say next week so I’m saving it. However, it does not look good for her. The writers seem a bit lost when it comes to what to do with the side characters (Cami, Marcel, Davina). The writers do seem to be cleaning house a bit. I expect there to be a lot more death in the remainder of the season. Lucien and Aurora are unlikely to make it out alive. This show has a habit of killing of the characters that were brought in for a specific storyline. I do fear for Kol. Unless Davina and Vincent take down the ancestors soon, this won’t end well for him.
Best quotes: Freya: “Oh, that looks like it hurts. That’s what I was going for.”
Hayley: “Goodnight, sunshine.”
Klaus: “I suppose I ought to thank you as well.” Hayley: “You can thank me in diaper duty.”
That’s it for this week. Check in again next week for an all new review and let me know in the comments what you thought of this week’s episode.
