The Originals - Behind the Black Horizon - Review

In this week’s episode of the Originals Lucien completed his master plan and became an Original vampire. His bite is even more lethal than one of a regular werewolf and it killed Finn. Kol is having trouble controlling his rage and Davina figured out that the ancestors are behind it. Vincent asks her to help him get rid of them. Klaus and Hayley return to New Orleans in time for Klaus to say goodbye to his brother. Lucien frees Aurora with the intention of turning her into what he is.

Saddest moment: So I guess I was wrong last week when I said that all of the Original siblings would definitely make it to the end of the season. It's been a while since I've been this far off. While Finn was the sibling I cared the least for, it was the reactions of his family that made his death (and his funeral) the saddest scene(s) in this episode. This will hit Freya the hardest. She was always closest to him. He was the only sibling she knew for so long and he never got past losing her. I knew the second I saw Lucien’s eye color that he would die. While this show is not afraid of resurrections, I do believe that this is the last we’ll see of Finn. He made peace with his siblings and it would be ridiculous if they brought him back again and ruined that.

Most pointless character: Matt Donovan. I get it, they wanted to add a Mystic Falls character and he was the only one still in town. But his presence served no purpose whatsoever. All he did was waste Elijah and Finn’s time. And then he had the nerve to brag about how he ran the vampires out of town. PLEASE, like he had anything to do with that. Caroline moved away to be with the twins, Damon chose to rot in a coffin and the rest got either snatched by The Armory or ran off to escape Rayna. What the hell happened to this character. He used to be so sweet. He should’ve left town seasons ago.

I can’t believe it: I actually started to feel bad for Finn this week. The way he talked about what he experienced while daggered. None of his siblings have ever been daggered long enough to experience this. Can you imagine how he felt realizing that not one of his siblings cared enough about him to remove the dagger. They all just figured it was easier to leave him like that. For a family whose motto is ‘always and forever’ they sure don’t seem to mean it that often.

The master plan: I’ve got to admit. There were some aspects of Lucien’s master plan that I did not see coming. But first things first, am I the only one who thought “alpha” when they saw Lucien’s red eyes? Anyway, it seems that Cami was right. Klaus should’ve killed Aurora instead of locking her away (poetic as it may have been). Her becoming as powerful as Lucien now is, is a major problem. Especially considering she’s going to be seriously pissed off now. Though I wouldn’t be surprised if one ends up killing the other because they don’t agree on something. They both have tempers.

Mind your own business: Speaking of tempers, Kol really went off the deep end this week. Last week it was just bloodlust which could’ve easily been explained but that rage that he had this week was not normal. It’s like it just kept building up even though he wasn’t holding it in. Davina figured out that the ancestors were driving him nuts. Those dead witches are seriously starting to piss me off. They’re dead, how is it their business what happens in the world of the living. I’m actually pretty excited to see Vincent and Davina team up to take them down because that means that we’ll be getting some really cool witch scenes.

Favorite duo: I’m going to miss these scenes between Klaus and Hayley now that they’re back in New Orleans. I am surprised at how little time they actually spent on the road. I expected this arc to last at least another episode or two. I hope they manage to keep up this dynamic back now that they’re back and don’t revert to their old ways. It really is in Hope’s interest that her parents get along. I’ve got to say that I’m surprised that Lucien didn’t move his werewolf operation to a different location. You could see by Klaus and Hayley’s lack of surprise that they’ve probably been tearing apart every single one of his offices. Maybe he just thought they wouldn’t figure it out in time.
The prophecy: So obviously Finn’s demise counts for the prophecy. But does it count for “by foe” or “by friend”? I mean, Lucien was their ally the past few weeks and only recently turned on them again. This could mean that Aurora is the “foe” since she hasn’t really been friend to any of them lately. But that would mean that one more sibling bites the dust this season. Unless there’s some other way that person goes down like how Rebekah was daggered, though I doubt they’ll use that method again.

Best quotes: Klaus: “And split up the team just when I’m discovering your carpool karaoke skills, I think not.”
Hayley: “Shall we?” Klaus: “Ladies first.”
Finn: “Don’t leave me.” Elijah: “Brother, we’re here.” Freya: “I’m here, brother. You are not alone. I’m here. I am with you, okay?”
Elijah: “You fought against what time and circumstance made you. Be free now Finn.” Kol: “I loathed you for centuries. Even now it remains unabated. But I know torment brother, so I hope you somehow find peace in the abyss.” Freya: “When you were born, you gave me a gift. You were my first friend. Today you gifted me my life and my brothers united, even if for a moment. I love you. Always and forever, brother, until forever ends.” Klaus: “Just know that you will be avenged.”

That’s it for this week. Check in again next week for an all new review and let me know in the comments what you thought of this week’s episode.
