    Ratings Breakdown:
CBS inched past NBC for overnight household dominance care of its combination of “Survivor” (#2: 5.2 rating/8 share), which featured one of the most bizarre – and satisfying – tribal councils in the history of the show, “Criminal Minds” (#2: 5.2/ 9) and recently introduced “Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders” (#1: 4.8/ 7). On paper, “Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders” is worthy of a second season renewal. But does the Eye net really need another older-skewing crime solver that feels like it is already five seasons old?

In series-premiere news, NBC reality competition “Strong” did not live up to its title with a mere 2.1/ 3 in the household overnights from 9-11 p.m. Comparably, retention for “Strong” out of the 8:30 p.m. portion of “The Voice” (6.5/10) was only 32 percent. It dropped by 27 percent from the first to fourth half-hour (9 p.m.: 2.6/ 4 – 9:30 p.m.: 2.0/ 3 – 10 p.m.: 2.0/ 3 – 10:30 p.m.: 1.9/ 3). And the second hour trailed the competition – aforementioned “Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders” on CBS (4.8/ 8) and “Nashville” on ABC (3.1/ 5) – by 58 percent and 37 percent, respectively. “Strong” debuts in its regularly scheduled Thursday 8 p.m. hour tonight. Keep in mind, that most new shows drop 10 to 20 percent in their second telecasts.

Overall, “The Voice” won the 8 p.m. hour with a 6.2/10 in the household overnights.

Tops for the evening was “Empire” on Fox with a 6.8/11 from 9-10 p.m., which built from recently renewed lead-in “Rosewood” (#4: 3.4/ 6 at 8 p.m.) by 100 percent. Earlier in the evening on ABC was typical overnight results for the 8-10 p.m. sitcom combination of “The Middle” (#3: 4.5/ 8), “The Goldbergs” (#3: 4.1/ 7), “Modern Family” (#3: 5.2/ 8) and “black-ish” (#3: 3.9/ 6). And The CW featured encore telecasts of “Arrow” (#5: 0.7/ 1) and veteran “Supernatural” (#5: 0.6/ 1), which is nearing the end of its 11th season.
