Empire is back. After three months, the Lyons family’s story is starting again for the second part of season 2. The fall’s finale was really intense: Rhonda was risking her life, Hakeem betrayed his family and Camilla was unexpectedly back as boss of Empire.
Death Will Have His Day is a strong episode, and finally Empire is back at its best. I loved how they handle all the various ramifications of the latest episode. Unfortunately Rhonda loses her baby, but Andre’s moments are really touching. His character has become really deep and interesting, and I didn’t expect that the writers will use the faith-card: Rhonda now doesn’t believe in God anymore. Andre is totally wrecked and desperate.
Jamal has to face his latest sexually fluid’s thing: his producer wants him to be more “gay”, because he is scared that his fans will be upset if they get to know about his last hook-up with a girl. He decides to do the opposite: he writes a song about love and about freedom. He doesn’t want to be trapped in a stereotype.
Cookie has to handle the crisis, and she starts to get closer to Lucious, in order to prevent him to make the situation even worse. She is really upset with Hakeem and in an hilarious and sad scene we witness her beating her son, connecting the episode with the pilot. Her moments are always the best ones.
Anika is as crazy as ever, and when she visits Rhonda, she is clearly happy that she will have the first heir. Is she the one who pushed Rhonda? We are still not sure about that.
Hakeem is torn between Camilla and his new girlfriend, but at the end he lies to Camilla and he doesn’t break up with Laura. He is really in a complicated situation.
All in all, Death Will Have His Day was an amazing episode. It was entertaining, emotional and it develops various storylines. Empire’s format should remain of 13-episodes. With a shorter order, it could shine again. The show doesn't need lots of guest stars, it just needs to have the same provocative and witty writing.
