Stitchers - 2.0 - Advance Preview: “Changes Are Coming”
Mar 22, 2016
AM Reviews StitchersLast season Stitchers went out with a pretty major cliffhanger as Cameron’s life was left in limbo. This is the point where most everyone would normally be begging me to reveal what happened but since Freeform has already revealed the outcome of the cliffhanger I will be addressing this preview as if you have already seen the sneak peek I’m talking about. If you haven’t and you want to remain completely 100% spoiler free I do suggest you stop reading right here. I will be talking about Cameron as the sneak peek reveals his status to be. You have been warned!
This episode starts exactly where we left the show last season and the emotions surrounding those first opening minutes is intense and well played by all the performers involved. Last season Emma Ishta was an expert at carrying Kirsten through some extremely intense emotional moments and still being able to maintain that emotional disconnect required of the character. What that hid away from us as an audience is how truly gifted Ishta is at emoting and portraying that emotion. As Freeform has already revealed (they gave away a lot more than most promotional teams are usually allowed to) she gets to guide Kirsten through some intense moments in this episode as Kirsten learns to connect with her emotions and she does it with such grace and charisma that viewers will be left in awe. What the network didn’t reveal is what the fallout of this change is for Kirsten and the program. Kirsten has changed and the consequences of that become abundantly clear at the end of a stitch early in the episode. Cameron survived relatively unscathed from his near death experience but Kirsten emerged from the Season 1 finale as a fundamentally changed person. Look for a lot of interesting and different moments from this character.
The team discovers something unexpected right under their feet that adds yet another element to the mystery surrounding the program and Ed Clark. This revelation also occurs after the unexpected demise of a character we got to know quite well last season. The fallout from this death leads every character into an intense and emotionally driven standoff with one of their own in the hot seat. Many relationships are also tested as a result of this investigation.
Kirsten embarks on several tenuous stitches in this episode and none of them result in any definitive resolution. Pay attention to the stitches in great detail because it is clear the show is setting up a very intriguing season long plot that promises some amazing storylines and many tidbits are dropped throughout each stitch. I suggest watching this episode at least twice because I noticed things on the second watch that I missed the first time. Every second of this episode has some important detail that you don’t want to miss.
Camille and Linus have equally important roles to play in this episode. Almost losing Cameron and seeing Kirsten change has a major impact on both of them. Linus realizes certain things in his life need to change. Camille is still her normal sarcastic self but even she was changed by what happened. They each come through for the team at critical moments and prove that they are critical members of this unit. Also dealing with a lot of fallout from the Season 1 finale is Maggie who is once again stuck in the middle of bureaucracy and morality. Fisher’s fate is addressed (which if you watch the sneak peeks you’ll already know) and in his absence we get introduced to some interesting new agents that don’t quite know how to play nice with the team.
As far as season premiers go this one was perfectly crafted. It ties up some loose ends from the prior season and sets up a whole new set of mysteries to unfold. The performances are emotional yet the lighter moments we all loved from last season continue to thrive and still bring levity to the show. As with any good show the characters are evolving and changing in dynamic new ways. Season 2 starts off with high energy and intrigue leading me to predict we are about to be treated to an outstanding new season.
I will be taking over the episode reviews for this season so check back next week after the episode airs for my full review of this episode. Tune in to Freeform on Tuesday, March 22nd at 9/8C to experience this episode first hand!
