Shadowhunters - Malec - Review

31 Mar 2016

This week’s episode of Shadowhunters stayed true to its title. Alec and Magnus took the main focus in this episode. Alec finally accepted his feelings for Magnus and kissed him … at his wedding to Lydia. Before that Clary, Jace and Magnus had gone to see Ragnor Fell in order to find a way to wake Jocelyn from her coma. Ragnor was however attacked by a demon and died. After the wedding Magnus figures out that Camille is the key to finding an antidote. Jace and Alec made up. Hodge steals the Cup for Valentine.

Best kiss: I, like everyone else, loved the Alec and Magnus kiss. It is without a doubt the kiss of the season. But I’ll leave the gushing to everyone else. I want to discuss the repercussions because, boy did Alec just light a match to his life. That took some serious guts. Here’s the thing, when Alec and Magnus came out with their relationship in the books it was during (or after, I’m a bit vague on this point) a war where Magnus was instrumental to helping the Shadowhunters win. So the Clave was a lot more lenient. On the show however, Alec and Magnus came out at his wedding to someone else. Let’s be honest, probably not the best moment (of course still better than after the wedding). The consequences will probably be more severe because of the circumstances. Maryse and Robert’s reactions were pretty much the same though. I wouldn’t be surprised if the writers used the Shadowhunters world’s reaction to them as a couple to cause some issues between them. What TV show couple has ever had a happily ever after in the first season?
Biggest hypocrite: Wow, I really don’t like Maryse. As a matter of fact, I probably dislike her as much as Magnus does. Of course everything had to be all about her and how this would affect their reputation. A reputation that is only this fragile because her own actions nearly destroyed it. When she said “And all for a downworlder.” my first reaction was “Careful Maryse, your Circle side is showing.”. She’s probably going to take some of her frustrations out on Izzy as well for ‘letting this happen’. And poor Max, he’s probably not going to get to see his siblings anytime soon because of this.

Favorite moment: I never imagined that I would say this, but my favorite scene this week actually featured Jace. I know, I was shocked as well. Jace finally acknowledged what I’ve been saying for weeks. That to Alec it felt like he was choosing Clary over him and that he didn’t care about the consequences it would have. While he didn’t completely own up to it, he did apologize. And to me, that’s the most important part. Now their relationship can finally start to mend. Because they’re going to need each other.

Biggest disappointment: Why was Ragnor Fell not green? Don’t tell me it was too difficult to add seeing as he was barely in the episode. I had such high hopes for seeing him on the show. I certainly didn’t think the writers would kill him off five minutes after meeting him. I did enjoy his imagined conversation with Magnus, though I think Magnus would’ve added a lot more sass if Ragnor had been alive. When Catarina Loss shows up she better be blue.

Poor thing: I felt really bad for Lydia. She may have been aware of Alec’s feelings for Magnus (because it was pretty obvious) but I don’t think she expected Alec to back out of the wedding. Shadowhunters don’t always get married for love. It's sad, but unfortunately true and everyone except for Clary seemed pretty aware of that. But she didn’t deserve to be left at the altar. The fact that she encouraged Alec to follow his heart, knowing what the consequences would be, makes me love her even more. (Can’t we keep her instead of Clary?) And to top it all off, before she can leave she gets knocked out. Which brings me to my next point...
Most confusing moment: Why the hell was the Mortal Cup still at the Institute? You’d think that after all the Inquisitor went through to get it back, she’d at least take it with her to Idris. Is it just me or did this make zero sense? And I can’t believe I forgot about Hodge. I actually started wondering who could’ve stolen it.

Best song: War of Hearts by Ruelle

Best quotes: Maryse: "Alec, what are you doing?" Alec: "Enough."
Clary: “My whole world turned upside down, but you and I thanking each other, that’s too much.”
Clary: “How do I trust you?” Lydia: “You’re Valentine’s daughter and I learned to trust you.”
Simon: “Guys, that was incredible. It was like watching the live version of The Graduate. You know, the Dustan Hoffman movie, the amazing one. You were Ben “Elaine!” And you were Elaine. A taller, masculine, handsome version of her but at the alter though, you were like “Ben!”. And then now you’re both sitting on the bus at the end of the movie, both totally stoked but wondering like “Wat are we going to do now?”, you know?” Alec: “Who invited the vampire?” Simon: “Seriously?”

That’s it for this week. Check in again next week for an all new review and let me know in the comments what you thought of this week’s episode.
