This week’s episode of Shadowhunters centered around Clary’s decision wheter or not to let Simon die or wake up as a vampire. She went to see his mother and in the end decided to bury him and let him wake up as a vampire. Something Simon may not be very happy with. The Lightwoods on the other had dealt with Lydia (the Clave’s envoy) and the attacks on Luke and Hodge by Forsaken who seemed to have angel blood in their system. Raphael took control from Cami and is now the new leader of the New York vampires. Alec, in an effort to save his family’s reputation, asked Lydia to marry him.
Favorite character: Usually this honor is reserved for the Lightwoods but this week it has to go to Simon. Even though he was kind of dead for most of the episode, I was still very impressed with what we did see of him. His reaction to realizing he’s a vampire broke my heart. Clary thought long and hard about what she should do and I understand why she chose to let him become a vampire, but Simon might not. I wouldn’t blame him if he blames her for what’s happened to him because it is kind of her fault. Of course she didn’t want it to come to this but if it hadn’t been for Clary, Simon would have never been in this position. She brought him into the Shadowworld and while being involved was his choice (he wanted to stay near her), she shouldn’t have ignored him after what happened with the vampires. If only she’d paid her best friend a little more attention.
I can’t not look at it: Oh Alec, I got a major déjà vu feeling when he proposed to Lydia. Remember when Chandler proposed to Monica in Friends after they had a fight. Well everyone’s reaction then was my reaction now. I get why he did it. He thinks it’ll save his family’s reputation, but after everything that happened this week… I can’t believe he actually did it. He needs to get a ‘Best Son’ medal for standing by his parents after they lied to him and Izzy. (more on that later) After his talk with Magnus I really thought he’d follow his heart. I guess doing so is not that easy.
Favorite reveal: Which brings me here. I’m so glad Alec found out about his parents being in the Circle. I doubt he’s told Izzy yet but he probably should wait too long to do so since it’s better she hears it from him than someone else. Maryse and Robert have been huge hypocrites these past few weeks. Making it seem that all of the scrutiny the Lightwoods are under is because of Alec and Izzy’s actions. While what they did is the entire reason they’re in this mess. I can’t wait for a confrontation between parents and children because they have some serious explaining to do.
Hold on a second: So in the books, Camille does not show up until book 4. Which means that the take-down of Camille after Simon is buried never happened in the books. However it did feel very familiar to one of the Bane Chronicles stories. When Raphael took control of the New York vampire clan because Camille was too out of control. I doubt she’s dead. She’s too important to get rid of like that. Especially before we get to see a reunion with Magnus. Though we might not see her anymore this season.
Biggest hypocrite: I’m sorry but there’s something that really bothered me about Jace this week. When he told Clary the bird story he said that as a Shadowhunter you have to stay objective and can’t let you emotions control you. Has he looked in a mirror lately. When it comes to Clary, Jace has always let his emotions get the better of him. Why else would he follow her into dangerous situations that could get him and his friends killed and take dangerous risks. He’s gone against his parabatai, whose back he’s always supposed to have, several times these past few weeks. When Alec mentions this it doesn’t really seem to resonate. Perhaps it’s Izzy’s turn to say something.
Most impressive character: I’m very happy with the casting of Raphael. We didn’t see all that much of him last time but this week we got a bigger glimpse into his character. He’s pretty much exactly how I imagined him while reading the books. With Simon now a vampire, I hope to see more of Raphael. If anyone knows how to help Simon live an as normal life as possible, it’s him.
Character I want to hate but can’t: I wanted to hate Lydia, I really did. But she did make some very good points. While her entrance may have been a tad dramatic, the reaction time of the Shadowhunters at the Institute sucked. Valentine shows up and they just didn’t notice. Jace and Clary are a bit out of control. I strongly disagreed with her decision to not turn the Cup over to the Clave. They have much better resources to protect it than the New York Institute. Plus if the Clave finds out that they’ve found it and didn’t hand it in, Alec and Izzy will be in even more trouble. Jace and Clary will get off, they always do. I don’t think Jace fully realizes how often his actions affect others more than himself.
Honorable mention: I love it when characters from the Infernal Devices get mentioned. Tessa was mentioned a few weeks back and this week Lydia mentioned her ancestor Henry. I’m so happy to see her say his name with pride. As most book fans know, at the time he wasn’t viewed as a brilliant inventor. Just a quiet guy who prefers tinkering with stuff than being out in the field. I hope we get a few more of these mentions in the remaining episodes. Preferably Will or Jem.
Best quotes:
Clary: “What’s the second rule?” Izzy: “There’s nothing a Shadowhunter can’t do in heels.”
Alec: “Magnus is quite magical.”
Magnus: “It’s just so hard to tell if Alexander is even interested. I mean, I can’t fathom why he wouldn’t be.” Izzy: “I’m not sure if you’ve noticed but my brother isn’t exactly warm and fuzzy.” Magnus: “I suppose with Clary’s arrival.” Izzy: “Valentine’s return.” Magnus: “Running the Institute.” Izzy: “The envoy of the Clave.” Magnus: “Who I hear is very impressive. What else, Oh, babysitting Jace.” Izzy: “And dealing with our parents who are trying to find him a wife. *sees Magnus’ face* Sorry.”
That’s it for this week. Check in again next week for an all new review and let me know in the comments what you thought of this week’s episode.
