Thanks to A for the heads up.
Lily van der Woodsen is ditching the Upper East Side for Quantico.
EW has learned that Gossip Girl alum Kelly Rutherford will recur on the FBI thriller in a multi-episode arc as Laura, Shelby’s (Johanna Braddy) mother who — along with Shelby’s father Glenn (Kevin Kilner) — was revealed to still be alive and siphoning off money from her daughter through a long con.
Of course, eagle-eyed viewers will have already spotted Rutherford in Sunday night’s episode, during which Shelby picked up and examined a photo of her parents. Showrunner Josh Safran, who previously served as a writer and executive producer for Gossip Girl, said he had hoped fans of the teen drama would notice. “Isn’t it a nice Easter egg, to see her?” Safran says. “It’s always nice to slip Kelly in anything, I missed her. But when you think about it, who looks like Johanna’s mother?”
Laura will arrive with Glenn in a story that’s set to make Shelby’s relationship with Caleb (Graham Rogers) more difficult — and even complicate things between Caleb and his own politician mother, Claire (Marcia Cross). Still, Safran warns that viewers should keep a close eye on Shelby before her parents return. “This has sent her reeling,” he tells EW. “That means 15 years of her life have been a lie, and not only that, that lie was the springboard for her to join the FBI. If everything that pushed you in one direction in your life is not true, then who are you? Forget what they have been doing for 15 years, what has she been doing for 15 years? … Shelby finds herself on uneven ground in a major way, and it begins to change her.”
