Major Crimes - Hindsight Part 4 - Review: One Truth Leads to Another

This week’s episode gives us a love of answers to the murder mystery and still manages to put a lot of focus on moving along the personal stories for all characters. More great writing from this great team.

After Hickman’s arrest, Raydor and Provenza bring him into an interrogation room to try and get the truth out of him. Tao cuts right to the point. Chasing Hickman is getting them nowhere. So, it’s back to the squad room for another brainstorming session. What they come up with is both a surprise and an “ah ha!” moment for me. Turns out the card on the flowers at the funeral, along with the card that was for “Pretty Boy”, weren’t for Tamika’s son, but for Tamika herself. Tamika was the third person in the car when the cop was murdered. I can’t say that I was shocked when I heard that, but I had never considered her because she seemed so young.

They use this information, and a nice deal, to get Buddha to fill in a lot of the blanks. We finally learn exactly what happened after the robbery that left the off duty police officer dead. Emile was so stoned he couldn’t remember where he’d dumped the gun. I’m not sure, but I think that Reverend Cop Killer was in jail at this point. His little brother seemed to be in charge of the clean up. I had to admit that the younger Price, Dennis, proved himself an excellent manager. He prioritized their tasks (get rid of the get away car first, deal with the gun second), he motivated employees to stay on task ( he put a gun against Buddha’s head and explained what he needed to do and the consequences if he didn’t do it) and get their job done. Let’s face it, Dennis got results (it was 12 years before the cops got even close.)

If they had just a bit of proof, they could arrest Dennis Price. The unit decides that their best option is to get Tamika’s baby daddy, Jon Barnes, to testify. This plan doesn’t go well, and Barnes ends up dead. They need to find another angle, and it turns out to be my favorite (not!) lawyer, Peter Goldman. I did NOT see that coming. My predictions that Daniel Price, aka Reverend Cop Killer, didn’t know that his brother was moving drugs through the church turned out to be correct. I was nowhere near guessing that Goldman was complicit in the drug operation. Awesome twist. This is why I enjoy this show so much.

Once Goldman is fired, Raydor and Provenza present the Reverend with the evidence. He can’t bring himself to take their word for it. He needs to talk to his brother. Unfortunately, we have to wait until next week to see how that conversation goes. Considering Dennis blames his older brother for his woes, it should prove to be a very interesting conversation.

Another great segment in this case. I want to say we’ve finally gotten all of the pertinent information needed to solve this case, but I’m more than likely wrong. We know that Daniel Price did indeed kill that off duty cop 12 years ago, and we know that his younger brother Dennis is the person running drugs through the church. But can we assume that that means that Dennis (and his crew) killed the ADA and her bodyguard back then? Can we assume that this means that Dennis killed Tamika?

This episode answered a lot of questions, but still left us with a number of questions still to answer. What really impressed me was that the writers managed to do all of that and deal with the personal stories. None of these personal stories felt like they were shoehorned into the episode. Each scene felt organic to the show.

I was a little surprised to find that Detective Dunn may not be a bad guy after all. (It’s still possible but looking unlikely.) It turns out that she may actually be on the canvas to provide a second chance at love for Julio. I’m good with that. Julio is definitely a guy who deserves that second chance.

When Julio walked into the doctor’s office, I suddenly realized we were about to discover that the doctor had NOT been the one to take Julio’s wife Maria off her medication. She went against the doctor’s wishes and stopped the medication all together. It made a sad sense that she would stop her medication in the hopes of increasing the odds that her baby would be born healthy, only for that decision to lead to the death of her and her child. I love when they give Raymond Cruz these moments. He turns these scenes into such beautiful subtle moments that they just break your heart.

Patrice stopped by to drop the standard wedding bomb on Provenza. He’s the one who wants a big wedding. She’d be perfectly happy to dash into the courthouse over lunch and let a Justice of the Peace do the deed. But. Since Provenza wants a wedding he has to step up and do his share of the planning. Provenza agrees. This led, hilariously, to moments of him checking off invitation and stemware options and grumbling about food prices. I adore Patrice. She doesn’t take any of his guff. For some reason I find the way he responds to her to be absolutely adorable.

Rusty gets outed by Gus for not telling anyone about the threat Sharon B mentioned to Rusty last week. Before Rusty could blink, Provenza had Sharon B. in an interrogation room and was getting to the bottom of the threat. This also meant that Sharon R. found out what was going on.

It was obvious, from the look on Rusty’s face when he walked into her office that he knew he was in trouble. I love the way Raydor handles Rusty. Yelling, screaming and grounding don’t seem to be her style. She has a way of getting Rusty to see her point without wielding anything more than her disappointment.

Rusty’s reason for not saying anything? He didn’t want to be any trouble. A part of that statement just broke my heart. It kind of felt like a part of him was still scared that the good thing he has with his new family could disappear without any notice. At least Gary was behind bars before the episode ended.
