“Gotham” continues its Mr. Freeze arc with “A Dead Man Feels No Cold,” an all-around cool episode.
Having realized at the end of last week that he can safely reverse his freezing formula, Victor Fries is determined to free his wife from the GCPD so he can save her life and sends a chilling message to Gordon and Bullock to make that clear. Captain Barnes decides that using Nora as bait is their best chance at capturing Fries and – to minimize collateral damage and because of Nora’s medical needs – they decide to spring their trap at Arkham Asylum. The anticipated assault on the asylum that follows makes for a fun sequence, as Victor has a few new tricks up his frozen sleeve. From there, the storyline takes some twists and turns, and there’s also more good guest acting from Nathan Darrow and Kristen Hager as the Frieses grapple with the loss of life their love has born.
The cops’ decision to use Arkham Asylum works out nicely for Hugo Strange, who had been trying, without success, to duplicate Victor’s cryonic formula. Watching him manipulate his domain so he can slyly maneuver around the police and make a sales pitch to Fries was very entertaining and B.D. Wong is clearly having a ball playing this part. I’m also loving Tonya Pinkins (“Army Wives”) as Ms. Peabody, Strange’s no-nonsense assistant.
This episode was also a strong outing for Leslie Thompkins, and Morena Baccarin. Acting as Nora’s doctor, Leslie is resolved to stay with her patient despite the dangers and the pair have several interesting discussions about the culpability of loving a good man who does bad things. Leslie also has an amazing reaction when, back at her old stomping grounds, she comes face-to-face with someone familiar.
In the subplots, Bruce and Alfred have returned to Gotham from
